Die fiktiven Versuchsanordnungen von Gesellschaft, die der Western immer neu inszeniert, verhandeln stets die Ursprünge einer ursprungslosen Gesellschaft und damit auch die Herausbildung normativer Ordnungen. In der Gesamtschau der Filme zeigt sich ein klares politisches Statement: Die Gesellschaftsentwürfe des Western sorgen für das Sichtbarwerden der Kontingenz der Frontier als politischer Mythos und stellen sich der vermeintlich politischen Evidenz von Grenzziehungen geradezu entschlossen entgegen. Die Autor*innen gehen den Politiken der Grenze im Western-Genre nach, indem sie verschiedenste Aspekte des Politischen fokussieren – etwa Gender, Gewalt, Nachhaltigkeit, Anthropozän oder Postheroismus etc. Drei Fragen sind für den Band leitend: Ist die Wiederkehr des Western in die Kinos einer bestimmten Konstellation in Politik und Vergesellschaftung geschuldet? Welche ästhetischen Reflexionsleistungen bringt der Western über den Zusammenhang von gesellschaftlicher Ordnung und Gewalt zur Aufführung? Examines how contemporary German and Polish novels reimagine borderlands as cosmopolitan spaces by engaging in border poetics, a narrative practice that relates political borders to figurative boundaries.Globalization notwithstanding, we live in an age of borders, as the ongoing conflict at Europe's eastern edge reminds us. Borders are meant to protect, but they more often divide and exclude. This book, however, focuses on literature that pushes back against the divisiveness of borders, advocating for transborder connections and criticizing exclusionary boundaries. It examines novels that reimagine past and present German-Polish borderlands as cosmopolitan spaces. Novels by Nobel Prize winners Olga Tokarczuk and Günter Grass are discussed alongside works by authors less well known internationally: the Polish Inga Iwasiów, the German Tanja Dückers, and the German-Polish Sabrina Janesch.The book utilizes and elaborates the concept of border poetics, a narrative and cultural practice that places political borders in relation to less concrete borders such as those of gender, ethnicity, or class, as well as in relation to epistemological and ontological boundaries: of language, knowledge, even reality. Because border poetics rests on the same productive tension between the particular and the universal that drives contemporary notions of cosmopolitanism, the book argues for the practice as an expression of what sociologist Gerard Delanty has termed "cosmopolitan imagination." The richly contextualized analysis is framed within transnational German Studies and draws on border studies, cosmopolitanism, European literature, and world literature.ders in relation to less concrete borders such as those of gender, ethnicity, or class, as well as in relation to epistemological and ontological boundaries: of language, knowledge, even reality. Ein Versuch, ihn mit behavioristischen Methoden ffir die Politikwissenschaft zu analysieren, den Somit und Tanenhaus unternahmen, ziihlt zu den Faktoren, die wissenschaftlichen Ruhm bedingen: originelle Ideen, Beitriige zur Syste matisierung, Anregung wissenschaftlicher Forschung, Publikation vielge brauchter Lehrbficher und organisatorische Fiihigkeiten. Carl Joachim Friedrich wurde bei dieser Analyse - obwohl ihr gelegentlich ein behaviori stisches bias nachgesagt wurde - von einem grossen Prozentsatz der inter viewten Politikwissenschaftler sehr hiiufig zu den bedeutendsten Gelehrten seines Faches geziihlt. Einmalig war die Dauer der wissenschaftlichen Hoch schiitzung, die er in einer Zeit einer immer kurzlebiger werdenden wissen schaftlichen Reputation genoss. Friedrich war neben Lasswell einer der wenigen, die sowohl vor 1945 als auch nach 1945 unter den 15 bedeutendsten 1 Politikwissenschaftlern genannt wurden. Es wird schwer sein, unter den fiinf Voraussetzungen wissenschaftlicher Reputation einen einzelnen Grund ffir die Bedeutung C.J. Friedrichs herauszustellen. Neue Ideen entwickelte Friedrich - so umstritten manche (vor allem in der Totalitarismusforschung) gewesen sein mogen - besonders in der Erfor schung des Konstitutionalismus, des Foderalismus und des Totalitarismus. Seine bekanntesten Beitriige zur Systematisierung der Forschungsergebnisse sind die Werke "Constitutional Government and Democracy" (1937 if.) und "Man and His Government" (1963).
