Over the last twenty years a major area of cognitive psychology has developed centred upon research into the issues of how visually presented words are processed so that they can be read and understood. The focus has been on how words are stored in the mental lexicon and retrieved during the reading process. If we possessed no mental lexicon, we would be unable to read. Combining theory, psychological tests, and corpus, this book is an interdisciplinary study of the conceptual transfer of abstract nouns in the bilingual mental lexicon of professional translators, a treatise in philosophical linguistics, and a challenger of traditional ideas in the psychology of concepts. Not only does it shatter the common belief among cognitive scientists that abstract concepts are not researchable and cannot be subject to empirical investigation, it goes far beyond this to prove that abstract conceptssuch as science, language, religion, etc.are even more amenable to empirical research than concrete ones. It establishes a new paradigm in the relationship between language and cognition that allows each to be accessed through the other. Arguing that lexical-semantic analysis of concepts should precede psychological tasks, and supplying the tools therefore, it provides a new cognitive approach to lexical semantics and a new semantic approach to cognitive psychology. What happens phonetically in the production of stems in words such as days and daze? Do inflectional stems differ phonetically from monomorphemic words? Can these differences be perceived? This volume aims to answer these questions in a replication project by investigating data from two corpora and a production experiment, as well as by extending this research with two perception experiments. It investigates what happens phonetically in the stems of words that end in homophonous suffixes, and whether listeners can perceive these subtle phonetic differences. Two potential effects were termed; categorical paradigm uniformity, in which stems of words ending in [s, z] are expected to have longer durations if these words are morphologically complex (e.g. days is longer than daze), as well as gradient paradigm uniformity, in which the frequency of related words is expected to have an influence on paradigm members (e.g. day influences days). Findings from these studies contribute to a growing body of research in the field of morphophonetics.
