This comprehensive monograph details polynomially convex sets. It presents the general properties of polynomially convex sets with particular attention to the theory of the hulls of one-dimensional sets. Coverage examines in considerable detail questions of uniform approximation for the most part on compact sets but with some attention to questions of global approximation on noncompact sets. The book also discusses important applications and motivates the reader with numerous examples and counterexamples, which serve to illustrate the general theory and to delineate its boundaries.

Generalized Convexity And Generalized Monotonicity written by Nicolas Hadjisavvas and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.
Various generalizations of convex functions have been introduced in areas such as mathematical programming, economics, management science, engineering, stochastics and applied sciences, for example. Such functions preserve one or more properties of convex functions and give rise to models which are more adaptable to real-world situations than convex models. Similarly, generalizations of monotone maps have been studied recently. A growing literature of this interdisciplinary field has appeared, and a large number of international meetings are entirely devoted or include clusters on generalized convexity and generalized monotonicity. The present book contains a selection of refereed papers presented at the 6th International Symposium on Generalized Convexity/Monotonicity, and aims to review the latest developments in the field.

This volume contains the articles contributed to the Minnesota Con ference on Complex Analysis (COCA). The Conference was held March 16-21, 1964, at the University of Minnesota, under the sponsorship of the U. S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research with thirty-one invited participants attending. Of these, nineteen presented their papers in person in the form of one-hour lectures. In addition, this volume con tains papers contributed by other attending participants as well as by participants who, after having planned to attend, were unable to do so. The list of particip ants, as well as the contributions to these Proceed ings, clearly do not represent a complete coverage of the activities in all fields of complex analysis. It is hoped, however, that these limitations stemming from the partly deliberate selections will allow a fairly com prehensive account of the current research in some of those areas of complex analysis that, in the editors' belief, have rapidly developed during the past decade and may remain as active in the foreseeable future as they are at the present time. In conclusion, the editors wish to thank, first of all, the participants and contributors to these Proceedings for their enthusiastic cooperation and encouragement. Our thanks are due also to the University of Min nesota, for offering the physical facilities for the Conference, and to Springer-Verlag for publishing these proceedings.

A set in complex Euclidean space is called C-convex if all its intersections with complex lines are contractible, and it is said to be linearly convex if its complement is a union of complex hyperplanes. These notions are intermediates between ordinary geometric convexity and pseudoconvexity. Their importance was first manifested in the pioneering work of André Martineau from about forty years ago. Since then a large number of new related results have been obtained by many different mathematicians. The present book puts the modern theory of complex linear convexity on a solid footing, and gives a thorough and up-to-date survey of its current status. Applications include the Fantappié transformation of analytic functionals, integral representation formulas, polynomial interpolation, and solutions to linear partial differential equations.

This collection of surveys consists in part of extensions of papers presented at the conferences on convexity at the Technische Universitat Wien (July 1981) and at the Universitat Siegen (July 1982) and in part of articles written at the invitation of the editors. This volume together with the earlier volume «Contributions to Geometry» edited by Tolke and Wills and published by Birkhauser in 1979 should give a fairly good account of many of the more important facets of convexity and its applications. Besides being an up to date reference work this volume can be used as an advanced treatise on convexity and related fields. We sincerely hope that it will inspire future research. Fenchel, in his paper, gives an historical account of convexity showing many important but not so well known facets. The articles of Papini and Phelps relate convexity to problems of functional analysis on nearest points, nonexpansive maps and the extremal structure of convex sets. A bridge to mathematical physics in the sense of Polya and Szego is provided by the survey of Bandle on isoperimetric inequalities, and Bachem's paper illustrates the importance of convexity for optimization. The contribution of Coxeter deals with a classical topic in geometry, the lines on the cubic surface whereas Leichtweiss shows the close connections between convexity and differential geometry. The exhaustive survey of Chalk on point lattices is related to algebraic number theory. A topic important for applications in biology, geology etc.

The 2-volume-book is an updated, reorganized and considerably enlarged version of the previous edition of the Research Problem Book in Analysis (LNM 1043), a collection familiar to many analysts, that has sparked off much research. This new edition, created in a joint effort by a large team of analysts, is, like its predecessor, a collection of unsolved problems of modern analysis designed as informally written mini-articles, each containing not only a statement of a problem but also historical and metho- dological comments, motivation, conjectures and discussion of possible connections, of plausible approaches as well as a list of references. There are now 342 of these mini- articles, almost twice as many as in the previous edition, despite the fact that a good deal of them have been solved!

Lectori salutem! The kind reader opens the book that its authors would have liked to read it themselves, but it was not written yet. Then, their only choice was to write this book, to fill a gap in the mathematicalliterature. The idea of convexity has appeared in the human mind since the antiquity and its fertility has led to a huge diversity of notions and of applications. A student intending a thoroughgoing study of convexity has the sensation of swimming into an ocean. It is due to two reasons: the first one is the great number of properties and applications of the classical convexity and second one is the great number of generalisations for various purposes. As a consequence, a tendency of writing huge books guiding the reader in convexity appeared during the last twenty years (for example, the books of P. M. Gruber and J. M. Willis (1993) and R. J. Webster (1994)). Another last years' tendency is to order, from some point of view, as many convexity notions as possible (for example, the book of I. Singer (1997)). These approaches to the domain of convexity follow the previous point of view of axiomatizing it (A. Ghika (1955), W. Prenowitz (1961), D. Voiculescu (1967), V. W. Bryant and R. J. Webster (1969)). Following this last tendency, our book proposes to the reader two classifications of convexity properties for sets, both of them starting from the internal mechanism of defining them.
