Document from the year 2022 in the subject Chemistry - Macromolecular Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, grade: 17, Gauhati University, language: English, abstract: Porous coordination polymers, also known as metal organic frameworks are a new type of hybrid material constructed via self-assembly of metal ions/metal clusters which function as nodes and organic ligands which act as bridges or linkers. They are one of the earliest developed classes of metal containing polymers. They extend infinitely one, two or three dimensional framework through coordination bonding, hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, C-H-π interactions as well as van der Waal forces. These weaker non-covalent interactions, are important for the packing of the one dimensional chains, two-dimensional nets and three-dimensional frameworks. In view of the tunable structures and promising properties shown by these systems various complexities have been prepared and thoroughly investigated over last decade. MOFs are currently flourishing fields of research owing to their intriguing structural motifs and various potential applications, in the field of gas storage, gas separation, catalysis, ion exchange, microelectronics, non linear optics, sensors, medicine and molecular magnetism etc. They possess structural regularity, high porosity, high surface area resulting in greater potential applications than conventional zeolites or activated carbons and mesoporous silica. For the construction of porous coordination polymers with diverse structures and properties selection of the special inorganic and organic building blocks is one of the important factors. Multicarboxylate organic ligands have proved to be an excellent choice for the construction of MOFs of higher nuclearity due to their different coordination modes with the metals, molecular flexibilities and structural stabilities. Metal carboxylate linker in combination with cross linked or pillered polypyridine have generated many interesting coordination architecture. Making use of transition metal carboxylate and linear bridging auxiliary ligands it is possible to construct 1-D, 2-D and 3-D porous coordination polymer of different pore structures and porosities. Aside from coordination bonding interactions, various non-covalent bonding or some weak intra- or intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen-bonding, π–π stacking and C–H–π interactions or van der Waals interactions also influence the formation of final architectures.

Porous Coordination Polymers: From Fundamentals to Advanced Applications brings together the latest advances in Porous Coordination Polymers (PCPs) for cutting-edge applications. The book begins by introducing PCPs, highlighting their structure, chemistry, basic properties and design approaches. This is followed by a chapter focusing on synthesis methods and mechanical properties. Subsequent chapters provide in-depth coverage of specific target applications, explaining the preparation of PCPs for areas including catalysis and photocatalysis, environmental remediation, gas storage and separation, energy storage and conversion, new generation magnets, nanocarriers in therapeutics, and biomedical imaging. Finally, current challenges and future developments are considered in detail. Porous Coordination Polymers are gaining increasing interest due to their attractive properties, such as structural flexibility, large surface area, tailorable pore size, and functional tunability, in turn enabling a wide range of possible applications which this book aims to highlight and to elucidate. This is a valuable resource for researchers and advanced students across polymer science, inorganic chemistry, environmental science, and materials science and engineering, as well as engineers, scientists, and R&D professionals with an interest in porous coordination polymers (PCPs) and novel polymeric materials for advanced industrial applications. Explores porous coordination polymers in detail while highlighting key ideas. Provides in-depth discussion of the design and development of new porous coordination polymers. Addresses present issues and looks at potential future developments in this innovative field.

Phosphine-based Porous Coordination Polymers (PCPs) have shown promising results as gas storage, gas separations, and molecular sensing materials due the versatility of the P(III)/P(V) chemistry, coupled with the inherent 3-dimensionality of the ligands. A variety of pre-synthetically modified organophosphine linkers have been reacted with alkali earth metals, early transition metals, and lanthanides to produce a series of Phosphine Coordination Materials (PCMs) with a wide array of topologies and pore functionalities. A p-carboxylated triphenylphosphine oxide linker, tctpoH3, has been reacted with Mg(II) to form the thermally robust PCM-11, which possesses superior room-temperature CO2 adsorption capacity at 12 bar. A new tetrahedral phosphonium salt, tctp+H3, has been synthesized by the Pd(II)-catalyzed reaction of p-carboxylated triphenylphosphine with 4-iodobenzoic acid to produce a zwitterionic monophosphine precursor. Upon examination of its crystal structure, it was found that tctp+H3 possesses a high degree of hydrogen-bonding between neighboring carboxylic acid groups, which causes it to polymerize into a porous, metal-free, ionically-bonded coordination polymer, iPCM-1. This phosphonium linker has been reacted with a series of Ln(III) precursors to form an isostructural set of PCMs that exhibit characteristic lanthanide luminescence properties. Several PCPs have been developed from a new bis(phosphine)MCl2 (M = Pd, Pt) complex upon reaction with early transition metals. Zn(II)-based PCM-18 exhibits unusual and fully reversible H2 adsorption at 150 °C, as well as post-synthetic reactivity inside the pores of the material. Co(II)-based PCM-24 also displays similar high-temperature H2 sorption behavior, along with a reversible pink to blue color change upon activation, indicative of a symmetry transformation from O [subscript h] to T [subscript d] about the metal node.
