Il presente volume prende l’avvio da un Convegno internazionale intitolato Post-Communism and Identities: East-European Perspectives, tenutosi all’Università di Padova tra il 4 e il 5 giugno del 2015, raccogliendo una parte degli interventi presentati in quell’occasione e aggiungendone altri sul medesimo tema, con l’intento di costituire un omaggio e insieme di tenere viva la memoria delle attività e degli interessi scientifici di Giorgia Bernardele. Il Convegno era stato ideato, progettato e organizzato da Giorgia durante il suo ultimo anno come studentessa della Laurea magistrale in Lingue e letterature europee e americane e come allieva della prestigiosa Scuola Galileiana di Studi Superiori dell’Università di Padova. Patrocinato dall’Associazione Alumni della Scuola Galileiana e dal Dipartimento di Studi linguistici e letterari, il Colloquio ebbe un’ottima riuscita, con due giorni intensi e partecipati, ricchi di interventi e discussioni, in cui alcuni tra i migliori specialisti italiani delle questioni storiche e culturali dell’Est europeo avevano dialogato con studiosi provenienti dalla Romania, dalla Repubblica Moldova, dall’Ungheria, dalla Russia, dalla Bulgaria, dalla Serbia. Nel frattempo, tra l’ideazione del colloquio e il suo svolgimento, Giorgia Bernardele si sarebbe laureata, con un eccellente lavoro di folclore comparato romeno e slavo-orientale, e sarebbe stata poi ammessa al XXI ciclo del Dottorato in Scienze linguistiche filologiche e letterarie dell’Università di Padova, prima classificata all’esame di ammissione con un progetto di ricerca dedicato, ancora una volta, al folclore romeno in prospettiva comparata. Nell’autunno del 2016, alla fine del suo primo anno di Dottorato, mentre si trovava a Mosca a compiere studi e ricerche presso il Centro di tipologia e semiotica del folclore dell’Università di Scienze umanistiche, Giorgia stava lavorando anche all’allestimento degli Atti del Convegno sul Post-comunismo. La sua improvvisa scomparsa avrebbe tragicamente interrotto tutto questo. L’auspicio è che questo volume contribuisca a mantenere vivo lo spirito di libertà e di intelligenza che ha sempre animato i pensieri e le ricerche di Giorgia.

Offering a single, coherent framework of the political, economic, and social phenomena that characterize post-communist regimes, this is the most comprehensive work on the subject to date. Focusing on Central Europe, the post-Soviet countries and China, the study provides a systematic mapping of possible post-communist trajectories. At exploring the structural foundations of post-communist regime development, the work discusses the types of state, with an emphasis on informality and patronalism; the variety of actors in the political, economic, and communal spheres; the ways autocrats neutralize media, elections, etc. The analysis embraces the color revolutions of civil resistance (as in Georgia and in Ukraine) and the defensive mechanisms of democracy and autocracy; the evolution of corruption and the workings of “relational economy”; an analysis of China as “market-exploiting dictatorship”; the sociology of “clientage society”; and the instrumental use of ideology, with an emphasis on populism. Postwar Europe and the Eurovision Song Contest examines how the Eurovision Song Contest has reflected and become intertwined with the history of postwar Europe from a political perspective. Established in 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest is the world's largest popular music event and one of the most popular television programmes in Europe, currently attracting a global audience of around 200 million people. Eurovision is often mocked as cultural kitsch because of its over-the-top performances and frivolous song lyrics. Yet there is no cultural medium that connects Europeans more than popular music, the development of which has always been tied to cultural, economic, political, social and technological change – making Eurovision the ideal tool to explain the history of Europe in the last sixty years. This book uses Eurovision as a vehicle to address topics ranging from the Cold War, liberal democracy and communism to nationalism, European integration, economic prosperity and human rights. It analyses these subjects through their cultural, political and social relationships with Eurovision entries as expressed through lyrics and music, as well as by examining public debates that have accompanied the selection of the entries and the organisation of the contest itself.
