Geoengineering is the deliberate and large-scale intervention in the Earth's climate system in an attempt to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming. Now that climate emergency is upon us, claims that geoengineering is inevitable are rapidly proliferating. How did we get into this situation where the most extreme path now seems a plausible development? Is it an accurate representation of where we are at? Who is this “we” who is talking? What options make it onto the table? Which are left out? Whom does geoengineering serve? Why is the ensemble of projects that goes by that name so salient, even though the community of researchers and advocates is remarkably small? These are some of the questions that the thinkers contributing to this volume are exploring from perspectives ranging from sociology and geography to ethics and Indigenous studies. The editors set out this diverse collection of voices not as a monolithic, unified take on geoengineering, but as a place where creative thinkers, students, and interested environmental and social justice advocates can explore nuanced ideas in more than 240 characters.

The European recovery has been disrupted since the onset of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Co-ordinated and timely policy action helped avoid a severe downturn, but the near-term outlook is clouded by uncertainty and downside risks. Monetary and fiscal policy need to become sufficiently restrictive to reduce underlying inflationary pressures durably.

An atmospheric scientist explains why global climate change mitigation and energy decarbonization demand American diplomacy, technology, and policy “Daniel Cohan makes a compelling case that the problem of climate change is solvable. Fixing the gridlock on global action requires fixing the gridlock here in the United States of America. Cohan shows how that can be done.”—David Victor, UC San Diego Professor of environmental engineering Daniel Cohan argues that escaping the gravest perils of climate change will first require American diplomacy, technological innovation, and policy to catalyze decarbonization globally. Combining his own expertise along with insights from more than a hundred interviews with diplomats, scholars, and clean-technology pioneers, Cohan identifies flaws in previous efforts to combat climate change. He highlights opportunities for more successful strategies, including international “climate clubs” and accelerated development of clean energy technologies. Grounded in history and emerging scholarship, this book offers a forward-looking vision of solutions to confronting climate gridlock and a clear-eyed recognition of the challenges to enacting them.

At the beginning of 2022, a major EU enlargement seemed unlikely in the near future. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 fundamentally shifted the European Commission’s stance. Ukraine and Moldova were granted EU candidate status, and Georgia was added to the list of potential candidates. This raises questions about the future of the European Neighbourhood Policy. While EU enlargement has gained momentum, certain areas of integration have stalled, such as the expansion of the eurozone and the Schengen area - despite Croatia’s recent accession, Romania and Bulgaria remain in waiting. Meanwhile, new formats of continental cooperation, such as the European Political Community, launched in 2022, raise the question of whether more differentiated integration models will emerge. Additionally, the war in Ukraine has exacerbated other crises, including inflation, the energy crisis, food shortages in the Global South, and unprecedented refugee movements - not only from Ukraine but also other regions. Against this backdrop, the 14th Network Europe Conference examined EU enlargement prospects and the challenges facing European integration in times of global crisis. This publication features contributions from Fatlum Ademi, Antonina Bakardjieva Engelbrekt, Melita Carević, Jelena Ceranic Perisic, Viorel Cibotaru, Waltraud Hakenberg, Garine Hovsepian, Andreas Kellerhals, Lee McGowan, Henri Vogt and Ralph Weber. Network Europe was founded in 2003 by the Europa Institute at the University of Zurich with support from the Swiss government. It serves as a forum for scholarly exchange on legal and political aspects of European integration, bringing together researchers from across Europe.

This Working Group III contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report provides a comprehensive and transparent assessment of the literature on climate change mitigation. The report assesses progress in climate change mitigation options for reducing emissions and enhancing sinks. With greenhouse gas emissions at the highest levels in human history, this report provides options to achieve net zero, as pledged by many countries. The report highlights for the first time the social and demand-side aspects of climate mitigation, and assesses the literature on human behaviour, lifestyle, and culture, and its implications for mitigation action. It brings a wide range of disciplines, notably from the social sciences, within the scope of the assessment. IPCC reports are a trusted source for decision makers, policymakers, and stakeholders at all levels (international, regional, national, local) and in all branches (government, businesses, NGOs). Available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
