The number of people claiming no religious affiliation has skyrocketed in recent years, and that growth shows no signs of slowing down. But while the religiously unaffiliated demonstrate a variety of attitudes toward religious belief-including, in many cases, a complete lack of interest-a prominent subset of nonbelievers has claimed the mantle of "atheism." For them, atheism has become a marker of identity and a source of community. However, atheists themselves often disagree about core ideas, values, affinities, and attitudes. Contemporary atheist culture is marked by debates over deconversion, the relationship between science and religion, and the role of authority. What exactly does it mean to be an "atheist" beyond a simple lack of belief in a higher power? Hannah K. Scheidt's Practicing Atheism: Culture, Media, and Ritual in the Contemporary Atheist Network examines the variety of cultural products, both corporate-driven and grassroots, that carry messages about atheism and its relationships to religion. Through primary source materials such as Internet communities, popular television programming, and cultural representations of the movement such as those found in atheist fan art, the book paints a portrait of a culture in unique tension with religion, and provides a unique perspective on whether or not organized atheism constitutes a belief system in itself.

So you're an atheist. Now what? The way we deal with life -- with love and sex, pleasure and death, reality and making stuff up -- can change dramatically when we stop believing in gods, souls, and afterlives. When we leave religion -- or if we never had it in the first place -- where do we go?With her unique blend of compassion and humor, thoughtfulness and snark, Greta Christina most emphatically does not propose a single path to a good atheist life. She offers questions to think about, ideas that may be useful, and encouragement to choose your own way. She addresses complex issues in an accessible, down-to-earth style, including:Why we're hereSexual transcendenceThe meaning of lifeThe meaning of deathFrivolitySensualityHow humanism helps with depression -- except when it doesn'tStealing stuff from religionWhy atheism demands social justiceDifferent ways to be a good personJoyand much more.Aimed at new and not-so-new atheists, questioning and curious believers, Christina ("Comforting Thoughts About Death That Have Nothing to Do with God," "Coming Out Atheist," "Why Are You Atheists So Angry?") shines a warm, fresh light on the only life we have.

The task of living faithfully within today’s secular culture is one of the most important issues facing Christians. Yet many misunderstand what culture is and how it shapes their hearts, minds, and souls. This book extends the work of James K. A. Smith by revealing how the secularizing influence of modern culture is not only transmitted through “cultural liturgies,” but has become embedded within the seemingly harmless practices everyday practices of education, work, consumption, and leisure. As a result, even practicing Christians may become practical atheists who have thoroughly internalized secular dispositions of mind and heart. This deeper understanding of cultural formation calls into question many of the dominant approaches to ministry and formation. Rather than merely offering information and inspiration, congregations must become sites of counter-formation that enable their members to fully embody the Christian faith within everyday life.

Atheism is characterized by rejection or lack of belief in the existence of a Supreme Being, commonly referred to as God. The people who practice this belief are referred to as atheists. There is a distinction however, to this belief. One form of atheism is a simple case of skepticism. There is a disbelief that God really exists. Simply put, it is refusal or inability to accept the concept that God is alive today, and that there is a God, as most people believe to be true. This is categorized as “weak atheism”. On the contrary, “strong atheism” has a crystal clear belief that God does not really exist. Therefore, when a person proclaims to be an atheist, he or she could be a weak or strong atheist, depending on the degree or intensity of the belief in godlessness in his or her life. This is a study of God as a concept, not from the perspective of any religious tradition, but rather as belief in an all-powerful, all-knowing and loving supernatural entity as has prevailed through the ages. The book reviews arguments throughout history for and against the idea of such a God. One unique perspective is to ask what can be modeled about God in denotative language of rationality (much as modeling in science, medicine and economics) in contrast to connotative language (e.g., myth, metaphor, art and music). Since the early Greeks there have been skeptics concerning God, with progressively more questioning since the Enlightenment. Today’s “new atheists” are seen as being even more assertive, and as having little respect for religious and philosophical traditions and the natural longing for some kind of supreme being. However, as demographic trends continue to diminish the influence of the church, there is opportunity for atheism to gain respect by respecting the beliefs of others. The book ends with some considerations of what it means to respect others’ beliefs and cultural traditions without abandoning a sincere disbelief in a supernatural being.

Finally, a book about meditation and meaning in life that is based on reason, not religious or supernatural explanations... Provocative and truly inspirational! One of the best books I've ever read.-Rachel Patel We think we perceive reality, but we live in our minds, in self-created realities, hypnotized by our conditioning and habitual ways of thinking. I am sure seekers will find much to support their efforts to awaken in this book.-Jack Elias "Atheist Meditation Atheist Spirituality" is a guide and memoir which shows that spirituality and meditation can be practiced without faith in God(s), gurus, or the supernatural. Techniques such as mindfulness and vipassana meditation have been practiced for thousands of years, are corroborated by reason, psychology and neuroscience, and help develop a sense of compassion, charity and the pursuit of meaning and knowledge. These secular practices are consistent with the best science available and are perfect for atheists, skeptics, humanists, freethinkers, as well as all others who wish to practice spirituality without religion or reference to supernatural forces. This is the complete version of the book, contains 214 pages. Note: The difference between "Atheist Meditation/Atheist Spirituality" and "Exploring Your Life" is that Exploring Your Life is an expanded edition, and it's intended for a general audience, while "Atheist Meditation" begins with a special message to the atheist community.
