प्रेमचंद ने हिन्दी कहानी को एक निश्चित परिप्रेक्ष्य व कलात्मक आधार दिया। उन्होंने कहानी के स्वरूप को पाठकों की रुचि, कल्पना और विचारशक्ति का निर्माण करते हुए विकसित किया है। उनकी कहानियों का भाव जगत आत्मानुभूत अथवा निकट से देखा हुआ है। कहानी क्षेत्र में वे वास्तविक जगत की उपज थे। उनकी कहानी की विशिष्टता यह है कि उसमें आदर्श और यथार्थ का गंगा-यमुनी संगम है। कथा के रूप में प्रेमचंद अपने जीवनकाल में ही किवदंती बन गए थे। उन्होंने मुख्यतः ग्रामणी एवं नागरिक सामाजिक जीवन को कहानियों का विषय बनाया है। उनकी कथा यात्रा में क्रमिक विकास के लक्षण स्पष्ट हैं। यह विकास वस्तु विचार, अनुभव तथा शिल्प सभी स्तरों पर अनुभव किया जा सकता है। उनका मानवतावाद अमूर्त भावात्मक नहीं, अपितु उसका आधार एक सुसंगत यथार्थवाद है, जो भावुकतापूर्ण आदर्शवाद, प्रस्थान का पूर्णक्रम पाठकों के समक्ष रख सका है। ‘प्रतिज्ञा’ उपन्यास विषम परिस्थितियों में घुट-घुटकर जी रही भारतीय नारी की विवशताओं और नियति का सजीव चित्रण है। ‘प्रतिज्ञा’ का नायक विधुर अमृतराय किसी विधवा से शादी करना चाहता है ताकि किसी नवयौवना का जीवन नष्ट न हो। नायिका पूर्णा आश्रयहीन विधवा है। समाज के भूखे भेड़िये उसके संचय को तोड़ना चाहते हैं। उपन्यास में प्रेमचंद ने विधवा समस्या को नये रूप में प्रस्तुत किया है एवं विकल्प भी सुझाया है। इसी पुस्तक में प्रेमचंद का अंतिम और अपूर्ण उपन्यास ‘मंगलसूत्र’ भी है। इसका थोड़ा-बहुत अंश ही वे लिख पाए थे। यह ‘गोदान’ के तुरंत बाद की कृति है। जिसमें लेखक अपनी शक्तियों के चरमोत्कर्ष पर था।
