Die Tagung „Biodiversität und Gesellschaft“ diskutierte Themen der Biodiversitätsforschung aus gesellschafts- und geisteswissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Die Einbeziehung dieser Perspektiven in die bisher vor allem naturwissenschaftlich geprägte Forschung ist für die Definitionen von Schutzzielen und Bewertungsmaßstäben sowie für die Entwicklung von Instrumenten für den Schutz und die Nutzung der Biodiversität notwendig. Da insbesondere die Instrumente stets innerhalb komplexer sozialer, ökonomischer und rechtlicher Zusammenhänge eingesetzt werden, müssen diese als gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen berücksichtigt werden. Dazu leistet dieser Tagungsband einen Beitrag, indem er Erkenntnisse verschiedener Disziplinen aufzeigt, die eine fundierte und nachhaltige Auseinandersetzung mit dem Verhältnis des Menschen zur und den Auswirkungen menschlichen Verhaltens auf die Biodiversität eröffnen. The conference “Biodiversity and Society” discussed topics of biodiversity research from the perspective of social sciences and humanities. The inclusion of these perspectives in the until now scientifically orientated biodiversity research is necessary for the definition of conservation goals and value standards, as well as for the development of instruments for the preservation and use of biodiversity. Since the instruments in particular are applied in complex social, economic and legal contexts, these societal conditions should be considered. This proceedings volume presents findings of multiple disciplines and thereby contributes to an integral and fruitful analysis of the human relation to and influence on biodiversity.

In this book, a resource-oriented perception of sustainable management is presented. Inhaltsangabe:Zusammenfassung: Die drastische Zunahme ökologischer Probleme auf lokaler, nationaler und globaler Ebene hat sich seit Beginn der neunziger Jahre in Westeuropa in einem wachsenden Umweltbewußtsein der Bevölkerung sowie einer stärkeren Betonung umweltpolitischer und umweltrechtlicher Maßnahmen in vielen Ländern niedergeschlagen. Dies betrifft auch die Länder Großbritannien und die Bundesrepublik Deutschland, die in dieser Diplomarbeit im Mittelpunkt stehen. Weiterhin setzte sich weltweit die Erkenntnis durch, daß eine Lösung dieser ökologischen Probleme nur durch das Prinzip einer "Nachhaltigen Entwicklung" zu erreichen ist, dem sich 1992 in Rio 178 Staaten verpflichteten. Dieser gesamtgesellschaftliche Ansatz basiert auf dem Zusammenwirken von Politik, privaten Haushalten und Unternehmen. Zunächst mag es ungewöhnlich erscheinen, Banken in diesem Zusammenhang eine tragende Rolle beizumessen. Schließlich werden sie dem vermeintlich "sauberen" Dienstleistungssektor zugeordnet, der keine Luft- und Gewässerverschmutzungen verursacht und keine besonders umweltbelastenden Produkten herstellt. Banken üben jedoch über ihre Finanzierungsfunktion, d.h. das Zusammenbringen von Kapitalgebern und -nehmern, einen entscheidenden Einfluß auf andere Unternehmen aus und tragen damit eine gesellschaftliche Mitverantwortung. Auch aus einzelwirtschaftlicher Sicht müssen Banken berücksichtigen, welche Risiken und Chancen aufgrund der größeren Bedeutung von Umweltaspekten für sie entstehen, und wie sie adäquat auf diese reagieren können. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es zum einen darzustellen, welchen Stellenwert das Thema Umweltschutz in der Praxis britischer und deutscher Banken einnimmt und inwiefern Banken in diesen beiden Ländern ökologische Aspekte in ihre Geschäftstätigkeit integriert haben. Zum anderen soll dabei der Bezug zu sogenannten Umweltmanagementstandards dargestellt werden, die bestimmte Vorgaben zur Integration des Umweltschutzes in ein Unternehmen machen. In diesem Zusammenhang werde ich insbesondere auf die mögliche Erweiterung der "EG Umwelt Audit Verordnung" auf den Finanzdienstleistungsbereich eingehen. Aus praktischen Erwägungen beziehen sich die Aussagen dieser Arbeit auf sogenannte "Universalbanken".
