Adler (1870-1937) stellt uns mit der Individualpsychologie (IP), einem vor allem aus der Therapiepraxis entstandenen psychologischen System, ein erstes Gesamtpsychotherapiemodell vor, das sowohl die normale Psyche als auch Neurosen, Psychosen, Psychopathien, Prävention und Rehabilitation umfasst. Aufgrund der Ergebnisse der Psychotherapieforschung ist die Suche nach einem umfassenden Psychotherapiemodell auch ein wichtiges Thema der Klinischen Psychologie heute. Die Arbeit soll einen Beitrag zur Beantwortung der Frage leisten, ob die IP als eine der ältesten Psychotherapie-Schulen im theoretischen Diskurs und in der psychotherapeutischen Praxis dennoch mit dem Erkenntnisstand der Akademischen Psychologie Schritt halten und in welchem Maß sie auch in unserer heutigen Gesellschaft in Deutschland Anteil an der Lösung oder Linderung psychischer Störungen und Krankheiten haben kann. Ihre Leistungsfähigkeit wird dadurch bewiesen, dass mit ihr auch die psychologischen und sozialen Phänomene einer späteren Epoche erklärt und verstanden werden können. Es geht also um das der IP immanente Entwicklungspotential, um seine konkrete Nutzung in der Gegenwart und um mögliche Entwicklungsbehinderungen. Schwerpunkt der Analyse ist die Entwicklung nach dem 2.Weltkrieg, besonders die Diskussionen, die in IP-Kreisen ab 1976 geführt wurden, dem Jahr, in dem der 1. Internationale Nachkriegskongress in Deutschland (München) stattfand. Auf diesem Kongress wurde die Frage nach der Identität der IP klar gestellt und äußerst kontrovers diskutiert.

Catastrophes and crises are exceptions. They are disruptions of order. In various ways and to different degrees, they change and subvert what we regard as normal. It is widely assumed that humanity should be able to learn from calamities (e.g., emergencies, disasters, catastrophes) and that the affected individuals, groups, and enterprises, as well as the concerned (disaster-) management organizations and institutions for prevention and mitigation, will be able to be better prepared or more efficient next time. Furthermore, it is often assumed that the results of these learning processes are preserved as "knowledge" in the collective memory of a society, and that patterns of practices were adopted on this base. Within history, there is more evidence for the opposite: Analyzing past calamities reveals that there is hardly any learning and, if so, that it rarely lasts more than one or two generations. This book explores whether learning in the context of calamities happens at all, and if learning takes place, under which conditions it can be achieved and what would be required to ensure that learned cognitive and practical knowledge will endure on a societal level. The contributions of this book include various fields of scientific research: history, sociology, geography, psychoanalysis, psychiatry, development studies and political studies, as well as disaster research and disaster risk reduction research.
