Principals most commonly ascend from the pool of those who are assistant principals, but it is unclear whether assistant principals are prepared to assume such a pivotal leadership role. This study seeks to compare the extent of on the job training provided to the assistant principals by examining ideal as compared to actual task performance in six competency areas associated with the job of principal. The research questions were as follows: 1. What are the perceived ideal professional tasks assistant principals should perform prior to becoming a principal? 2. Which tasks are performed by assistant principals? 3. Do these performed tasks prepare assistant principals for principalships? Utilizing Survey Monkey, a survey was e-mailed to principals with 1-3 years of experience in the State of Georgia. Descriptive statistics, Pearson Correlations, and t-tests were used for data analysis. As for research question 1, this study revealed that the tasks that ranked the highest among the study participants regarding perceived ideal tasks that assistant principals should perform prior to becoming principal were the competencies falling under the categories of Instructional Leader, Leadership in Staff Personnel, and Management of Schools. For question 2, Pearson Correlation showed that there were no significant correlations for ideal and actual tasks, except in the area of Instructional Leader. Regarding research question 3, The Pearson Correlation along with t-tests of subscales showed that there are significant differences between the ideal and actual tasks performed by assistant principal. The Pearson Correlation highlighted that the only significant correlation between ideal and actual competency tasks was found in the area of Instructional Leader. In conclusion, this study indicated that assistant principals are not adequately prepared to transition to the role of principal.

Principals have been expected to serve as managers and leaders of curriculum and instruction while facing intense accountability and had to be good communicators capable of building relationships within their school and with community stakeholders. School complexity increased challenges leaders faced, so educational leaders utilized research-based strategies to develop professional resilience and grow in the face of adversity. In preparation for school principalship, assistant principals needed to move beyond school operation and management roles to become a viable candidate for career advancement. Limited research exists describing the preparation of assistant principals for advancement. The purpose of this convergent mixed methods research study was to examine the relationship between beliefs and perceived experiences during assistant principalship and readiness to assume the role of principal. The 33 participants in this study were public school principals currently employed in a school district in Middle Georgia. The three data sources in this study included a Demographic Survey, Principal Readiness Inventory, and Qualitative Questionnaire, which were combined into one online measure for data collection purposes. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted using the quantitative data, and a thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the qualitative data by principal readiness group. According to the data collected, participants reported higher levels of mentoring prior to the initial educational leadership certification compared to the level of mentoring after the initial educational leadership certification. This information could be useful in developing effective leadership development programs that would help assistant principals make a transition into the principalship role.

"The purpose of this study is to take a deeper look at the duties, responsibilities, experiences, and staff development of the assistant principals to determine if they are prepared to lead as principals in diverse schools. The role of the assistant principal is essential and it can help to enhance and enrich the school and community. This study sought to determine whether or not assistant principals' current roles, duties, responsibilities, experiences, and staff development are helpful for preparation towards them becoming culturally responsive leaders who are able to lead diverse schools. Being a culturally responsive leader is critical because of the increase in diversity within schools. This study represents a close examination intended to help us understand how vital the assistant principal position is and how it can be used as a stepping stone to an individual becoming a more effective and successful principal in a diverse school. Currently, very little research has been conducted regarding being an assistant principal. The majority of the existing research on being an assistant principal targets their roles and duties within schools, while another aspect of the research examines whether or not assistant principals are prepared to be principals. This study looks further into the roles, duties, and experiences of assistant principals and their preparation toward culturally responsive leadership. To help examine this topic further, the methodology I used was a basic qualitative study. I conducted this study in a single district to determine if and how they prepare their assistant principals to be principals in diverse schools. This qualitative study considers data gathered through interviews. There were twelve participants included in this study. The data collected in this study identified key points/themes reflecting the work of assistant principals and their preparation to be culturally responsive leaders who lead diverse schools. My findings were unlike what I had anticipated before conducting the study. With regard to whether assistant principals felt they were prepared to be culturally responsive leaders who lead diverse schools, I expected to find that assistant principals felt that the preparation of assistant principals does not include sufficient development in culturally responsive leadership in order to lead successfully in a diverse school. During my research, I did find that the study's participants felt like they did not receive enough formal preparation such as university coursework and professional development regarding culturally responsive leadership, but the assistant principals in the study still felt like they were culturally responsive leaders who would be successful leading a diverse school. Even though they had a lack of formal preparation toward culturally responsive leadership, they felt that being a culturally responsive leader was embedded in what they do; therefore, leading them to say they are culturally responsive leaders. This implies that culturally responsive leadership cannot be taught, which goes against established research findings. Research suggests, and the participants agreed, that more development is needed in this area. Culturally responsive leaders are intentional and thoughtful in their planning approach toward building a culturally responsive school environment. The participants neither shared examples, nor did the data reveal ways in which they acted with intentionality toward being a culturally responsive leader within their school. Considering the existing scholarship, this study is important because currently very little research examines the duties, responsibilities, experiences, and staff development of the assistant principals toward becoming culturally responsive leaders or leading in diverse schools. This research has the potential to lend valuable insight into how districts and school leadership preparation programs can better prepare assistant principals to be successful and highly effective culturally responsive leaders when they choose to become principals in diverse school communities."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Preparing Principals for a Changing World provides a hands-on resource for creating and implementing effective policies and programs for developing expert school leaders. Written by acclaimed author and educator Linda Darling-Hammond and experts Debra Meyerson, Michelle LaPointe, and Margaret Terry Orr, this important book examines the characteristics of successful educational leadership programs and offers concrete recommendations to improve programs nationwide. In a study funded by the Wallace Foundation, Darling-Hammond and the team examined eight exemplary principal development programs, as well as state policies and principals' experiences across the country. Using the data from the study, they reveal how successful programs are structured, the skills and knowledge participants gain, and what they are able to do in practice as school leaders as a result. What do these exemplary programs have in common? Aggressive recruitment; close ties with schools in the community; on-the-ground training under the wing of expert principals, and a strong emphasis on the cutting-edge theories of instructional and transformational leadership. In addition to highlighting the programs' similarities, the study also explains the differences among the programs and sheds light on the effectiveness of approaches and models from different states and contexts?East, West, North, and South; urban and rural; pre-service and in-service. The authors analyze program outcomes for principals and their schools, including illustrative case studies and educators' voices on the influence of programs' strategies for recruitment, internships, mentoring, and coursework. The ideas and suggestions outlined in Preparing Principals for a Changing World are presented with the goal of increasing the number of highly qualified, thoughtful, and innovative educational leaders.

This edited book highlights the importance and complexity of the assistant principalship. As noted in all the chapters, the assistant principal is a critical partner in creating a professional learning community that serves all students well. Often neglected or ignored in the literature, assistant principals are more than disciplinarians and student or building managers. In the best of all worlds, they provide the professional support and partnership with their principals to create high-performing schools. Unfortunately, as noted in some of the chapters, the ideal and actual roles that assistant principals exercise often create a gap that seethes with disillusionment and dissatisfaction. The challenge for the profession is to better align the roles and expectations of assistant principals so that they can experience the best of being a school leader.
