Excerpt from Principles of Alternating Current Machinery The use by the author of this book in class since its publication in 1916, as well as constructive criticism received from fellow teachers, has indicated minor changes in the text which would add to its clearness. These changes have been incorporated in the second edition. Such typographical errors as unavoidably appeared in the first edition have been corrected. Chapter VIII, concerning the transient short-circuit conditions in an alternator, has been rewritten and expanded to bring out more clearly what actually takes place. A small amount of new material has been added for the sake of completeness. Although some criticism was offered to the first edition of the book on the ground that it contained no problems, the addition of problems seemed unnecessary as a much more complete set than could be included in the book was already published under the title "Problems in Alternating Current Machinery" by Professor W V. Lyon. These problems were compiled by Professor Lyon for use in connection with the course in Alternating Current Machinery at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for which the author's book was written. Preface to the First Edition This book deals with the principles underlying the construction and operation of alternating-current machinery. It is in no sense a book on design. It is the result of a number of years' experience in teaching the subject of Alternating-current Machinery to senior students in Electrical Engineering and has been developed from a set of printed and neostyled notes used for several years by the author at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Excerpt from Problems in Alternating Current Machinery These problems chiefly concern the theory of the operation of alternating current machinery, and are such as we give to the fourth year students in electrical engineering in this subject. In each chapter the problems of a similar nature are grouped together, and those of each group are then arranged in the approximate order of their difficulty. The groups in each chapter follow each other in as logical an order as possible, both from point of difficulty and the presentation of the subject. In order that this collection of problems may be useful among different classes of students a large variety has been included, ranging from the very simple to those of considerable difficulty. Wherever it is essential the data have been taken from actual apparatus. This was possible through the courtesy of two of the large manufacturing companies. In some of the problems so few data are given that approximate methods of solution must be used, but care has been taken to so state them that the errors thus introduced need not be large. This lack of data is frequently met in practice. It has been thought best not to give introductory paragraphs for each chapter as was done in the preceding volume of prob lems inasmuch as they would have to be of considerable length to be of much value. Excerpt from Alternating Currents in Theory and Practice Though there are numerous books dealing with the Principles of Alternating Currents, the writer has on many occasions, when recommending a text book to students, found a difficulty in selecting one which, while giving a sufficiently full account of the laws governing the flow of alternating currents in circuits, also includes an account of the several types of alternating current machines. It is hoped that the present book will fill the gap, since, while the fundamental principles of the alternating current circuit are adequately considered, sufficient matter concerning machines and appliances is given to enable readers who have worked through the book to proceed at once to a specialised study of the particular machine or appliance in which they are more immediately interested. Many students, in fact the majority, desire to take up the study of alternating currents with a very inadequate knowledge of mathematics. In view of this fact, which is to be greatly regretted and which constitutes one of the greatest difficulties of students and teachers alike, the calculus has not been used in the body of the book; it has, however, been used in a few footnotes, mainly with the idea of showing students what excellent examples of the use of elementary calculus are furnished by the subject under consideration.
