While Oscar Wilde is now strongly associated with the tone of whimsy that imbues his breezy, effortlessly witty epigrams and essays, the Irish writer and playwright was also a serious thinker who, having been sentenced to two years of hard labor as a punishment for his homosexuality, was deeply engaged with the social issues of his day. This essay, penned as a letter to a newspaper soon after Wilde's release from prison, takes up the moral issue of penal sentences for juveniles, a question that still has great relevance today.

Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Children in Prison and Other Cruelties of Prison Life, was published by the novelist and poet Oscar Wilde as an attempt to discover what he considered the scandal of child prisoners incarcerated in British prisons. The pamphlet, first published in the form of a letter to the editor of the Daily Chronicle in 1897, was written after Wilde was released from Reading prison: he had served a sentence for sexual offenses. During his time as a prisoner, Wilde had observed many young men locked up with adult criminals, whose corrupting influence he believed would lead children to a life of greater crime. For young people, adult jails were the cause of "sheer terror." Many children were locked up in the dark for 23 hours each day, feeding only on water and 'poorly baked' bread.Wilde was particularly outraged by the treatment received by a prison guard, Thomas Martin, who was fired from his post for offering a cookie to a boy who was "crying with hunger." In Wilde's opinion, such treatment was inhumane, and he advocated that no child be incarcerated for any reason if he was under the age of 14. Oscar Wilde (October 16, 1854 - November 30, 1900)

"...SIR,--I learn with great regret, through an extract from the columns of your paper, that the warder Martin, of Reading Prison, has been dismissed by the Prison Commissioners for having given some sweet biscuits to a little hungry child. I saw the three children myself on the Monday preceding my release. They had just been convicted, and were standing in a row in the central hall in their prison dress, carrying their sheets under the arms previous to their being sent to the cells allotted to them. I happened to be passing along one of the galleries on my way to the reception room, where I was to have an interview with a friend...."
