The private pension system, together with Social Security, has provided millions of Americans with income security in retirement. But over the past thirty years, pension coverage has stagnated, leaving behind some vulnerable groups. Defined contribution plans have exposed workers to greater investment risk, while cash balance and other hybrid plans may have adverse effects on older workers caught in the transition. Pension regulations, infamous for their complexity, can be bewildering to policy analysts and policymakers. Private Pensions and Public Policies sheds timely and much-needed light on specific issues within the broader context and framework of pension reform. Contributors focus on topics that must be addressed in any reform effort, including the effects of the shift in emphasis toward defined contribution plans (after the 1974 Employee Retirement Income and Security Act) and hybrid plans (from the 1990s); regulatory issues such as nondiscrimination rules and contribution limits; how to increase the information available to participants and improve financial education; how participants in defined contribution plans make choices on questions such as asset allocation, back-loaded versus front-loaded saving, and annuities versus lump sum distributions; and the interaction of the private pension system with Social Security. Contributors include Robert L. Clark (North Carolina State University), Sylvester J. Schieber (Watson Wyatt Worldwide), Richard A. Ippolito (George Mason University School of Law), Alan L. Gustman (Dartmouth College), Thomas L. Steinmeier (Texas Tech University), John Karl Scholz (University of Wisconsin), Dean M. Old Age Provision And Homeownership Fiscal Incentives And Other Public Policy Options written by Martina Eckardt and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-10 with Business & Economics categories.

In light of demographic change and the growing problems of traditional old-age security systems, this book discusses two essential instruments in connection with privately providing for old-age security: (1) savings in private pension schemes and (2) building up equity for home-ownership. Further, it assesses the relationship between the two instruments and offers a unique overview of the latest market developments. In order to represent the profound differences between the individual member states of the EU, this book features six country-specific studies – covering Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom – that provide detailed insights into the complexity of local private pension schemes, mortgage markets, and housing markets. Lastly, the book discusses public policies and fiscal incentives intended to better integrate residential property with private pensions. It will appeal to both, private households seeking to build up old-age security, as well as policy makers interested in providing secure pension schemes.

This important new handbook provides a comprehensive assessment of contemporary public policy and governance in the Global South. It offers incisive comparative analyses and presents policy-specific case studies from across Asia, Latin America, Middle East, and Africa. The aim is to inform future governance research, policy, and practice in these regions. This book is timely as it responds to how governments in the Global South are dealing with recent complex series of challenges and crises of the 21st Century. These range from the pressures of a global pandemic to the impacts of climate change, democratic backsliding, deteriorating public services, and the realignments in the international political economy following the rise of China. In doing so, it reflects on the political transformations, global convergences, and underlying regional, as well as national, trajectories that have taken place recently, focusing on among others: Democratic governance and institutional trust Public service delivery, motivation, and governance outcomes Policy crises, disaster management, and climate change Policy successes and failures Policy innovations, digitalisation, and policy research in the Global South Different authors bring together varied and specialised perspectives and experiences, which are important for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers wishing to understand emerging governance models, innovations, and challenges within the Global South.
