The Large Hadron Collider at CERN has the potential to make a major discovery as early as 2008 from simple measurements of events with two high energy jets. This talk will present the jet trigger and analysis plans of the CMS collaboration, which were produced at the LHC Physics Center at Fermilab. Plans to search the two jet channel for generic signals of new particles and forces will be discussed. I will present the anticipated sensitivity of the CMS experiment to a variety of models of new physics, including quark compositeness, technicolor, superstrings, extra dimensions and grand unification.

This thesis is based on the first data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Its theme can be described as the classical Rutherford scattering experiment adapted to the LHC: measurement of scattering angles to search for new physics and substructure. At the LHC, colliding quarks and gluons exit the proton collisions as collimated particle showers, or jets. The thesis presents studies of the scattering angles of these jets. It includes a phenomenological study at the LHC design energy of 14 TeV, where a model of so-called large extra dimensions is used as a benchmark process for the sensitivity to new physics. The experimental result is the first measurement, made in 2010, by ATLAS, operating at the LHC start-up energy of 7 TeV. The result is compatible with the Standard Model and demonstrates how well the physics and the apparatus are understood. The first data is a tiny fraction of what will be accumulated in the coming years, and this study has set the stage for performing these measurements with confidence as the LHC accumulates luminosity and increases its energy, thereby probing smaller length scales.

This book discusses searches for Dark Matter at the CERN’s LHC, the world’s most powerful accelerator. It introduces the relevant theoretical framework and includes an in-depth discussion of the Effective Field Theory approach to Dark Matter production and its validity, as well as an overview of the formalism of Simplified Dark Matter models. Despite overwhelming astrophysical evidence for Dark Matter and numerous experimental efforts to detect it, the nature of Dark Matter still remains a mystery and has become one of the hottest research topics in fundamental physics. Two searches for Dark Matter are presented, performed on data collected with the ATLAS experiment. They analyze missing-energy final states with a jet or with top quarks. The analyses are explained in detail, and the outcomes and their interpretations are discussed, also in view of the precedent analysis of theoretical approaches. Given its depth of coverage, the book represents an excellent reference guide for all physicists interested in understanding the theoretical and experimental considerations relevant to Dark Matter searches at the LHC.

We currently live in the golden age of experimental particle physics. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) finally discovered the Higgs particle and may soon allow us to probe TeVscale new physics. Moreover, dark matter indirect detection experiments may have found annihilation products in our galaxy while the direct detection experiments keep improving their upper bounds on dark matter interactions with ordinary matter. That being said, the current efforts to discover any physics beyond the standard model have failed. We thus need to come up with better models and better tools to probe new physics. This thesis which collects the author's PhD research papers is an effort in this direction. We begin by showing how singular dark matter self-interaction can significantly enhance dark matter annihilation in today's Universe. Then we explore a concrete dark matter model where a particle called the dilaton mediate the interactions between the dark sector and the standard model. Finally we devise a new method to discern heavy boosted particles from QCD jets at the LHC.

This thesis describes the use of the angular distributions of the most energetic dijets in data recorded by the ATLAS experiment, at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the goal of which is to search for phenomena beyond what the current theory of Particle Physics (the Standard Model) can describe. It also describes the deployment of the method used in ATLAS to correct for the distortions in jet energy measurements caused by additional proton–proton interactions. The thesis provides a detailed introduction to understanding jets and dijet searches at the LHC. The experiments were carried out at two record collider centre-of-mass energies (8 and 13 TeV), probing smaller distances than ever before. Across a broad momentum transfer range, the proton constituents (quarks and gluons) display the same kinematical behaviour, and thus still appear to be point-like. Data are compared to predictions corrected for next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics (NLO QCD) as well as electroweak effects, demonstrating excellent agreement. The results are subsequently used to set limits on parameters of suggested theoretical extensions to the Standard Model (SM), including the effective coupling and mass of a Dark Matter mediator.

Introduction: Over the centuries we have been studying the world around us, discovering new physics at new length scales. Starting from our everyday experience which ranges from scales of about 10[superscript 3] to 10[superscript -3] meters (m), we encounter phenomena like gravity, contact forces, fluid dynamics and light. When we move on to the smaller scales of cells at 10[superscript -5] m or molecules and atoms around 10[superscript -10] m, we pass entire fields of science such as biology and chemistry. It is surprising that the underlying physics that leads to this rich variety of phenomena is simply (quantum) electrodynamics. The nucleus of the atom at scales of 10[superscript -15] m is made of protons and neutrons and is held together by the nuclear force. This is a residual force coming from the strong force, also known as Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). QCD is responsible for confining the quarks to protons and neutrons. The remaining force that is part of the well established Standard Model of particle physics is the weak force, which for example plays a role in some hadron decays. With the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN starting to take data, we will be probing nature at smaller length scales than before and hope to discover new physics. In order to reconstruct new short distance physics from the measured leptons and QCD radiation, one typically looks for a signal with a certain number of jets of energetic hadrons. This thesis explores the effect of such restrictions on the hadronic final state in theoretical calculations, with an emphasis on the 0-jet case which allows us to study initial-state radiation. An introduction to the work in this thesis can be found in the next section ...

The Standard Theory of Particle Physics describes successfully the observed strong and electroweak interactions, but it is not a final theory of physics, since many aspects are not understood: (1) How can gravity be introduced in the Standard Theory? (2) How can we understand the observed masses of the leptons and quarks as well as the flavor mixing angles? (3) Why are the masses of the neutrinos much smaller than the masses of the charged leptons? (4) Is the new boson, discovered at CERN, the Higgs boson of the Standard Theory or an excited weak boson? (5) Are there new symmetries at very high energy, e.g. a broken supersymmetry? (6) Are the leptons and quarks point-like or composite particles? (7) Are the leptons and quarks at very small distances one-dimensional objects, e.g. superstrings? This proceedings volume comprises papers written by the invited speakers discussing the many important issues of the new physics to be discovered at the Large Hadron Collider.

We investigate the weak electric and magnetic dipole moments of top quark-Z boson interactions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International Linear Collider (ILC). Their vanishingly small magnitude in the Standard Model makes these couplings ideal for probing New Physics interactions and for exploring the role of top quarks in electroweak symmetry breaking. In our analysis, we consider the production of two top quarks in association with a Z boson at the LHC, and top quark pairs mediated by neutral gauge bosons at the ILC. These processes yield direct sensitivity to top quark-Z boson interactions and complement indirect constraints from electroweak precision data. Our computation is accurate to next-to-leading order in QCD, we include the full decay chain of top quarks and the Z boson, and account for theoretical uncertainties in our constraints. Furthermore, we find that LHC experiments will soon be able to probe weak dipole moments for the first time.
