The Large Hadron Collider at CERN has the potential to make a major discovery as early as 2008 from simple measurements of events with two high energy jets. This talk will present the jet trigger and analysis plans of the CMS collaboration, which were produced at the LHC Physics Center at Fermilab. Plans to search the two jet channel for generic signals of new particles and forces will be discussed. I will present the anticipated sensitivity of the CMS experiment to a variety of models of new physics, including quark compositeness, technicolor, superstrings, extra dimensions and grand unification.

Search For Dark Matter With The Atlas Detector written by Johanna Gramling and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-01 with Science categories.

This book discusses searches for Dark Matter at the CERN’s LHC, the world’s most powerful accelerator. It introduces the relevant theoretical framework and includes an in-depth discussion of the Effective Field Theory approach to Dark Matter production and its validity, as well as an overview of the formalism of Simplified Dark Matter models. Despite overwhelming astrophysical evidence for Dark Matter and numerous experimental efforts to detect it, the nature of Dark Matter still remains a mystery and has become one of the hottest research topics in fundamental physics. Two searches for Dark Matter are presented, performed on data collected with the ATLAS experiment. They analyze missing-energy final states with a jet or with top quarks. The analyses are explained in detail, and the outcomes and their interpretations are discussed, also in view of the precedent analysis of theoretical approaches. Given its depth of coverage, the book represents an excellent reference guide for all physicists interested in understanding the theoretical and experimental considerations relevant to Dark Matter searches at the LHC.

This doctoral thesis focuses on the search for new phenomena in top-antitop quark (tt) final states with additional b-quark jets at the LHC. It uses the full Run 1 dataset collected by the ATLAS experiment in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV. The final state of interest consists of an isolated lepton, a neutrino and at least six jets with at least four b-tagged jets, a challenging experimental signature owing to the large background from tt+heavy-flavor production. This final state is characteristic of ttH production, with the Higgs boson decaying into bb, a process that allows direct probing of the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling. This signature is also present in many extensions of the Standard Model that have been proposed as solutions to the hierarchy problem, such as supersymmetry or composite Higgs models, which predict the pair production of bosonic or fermionic top quark partners, or the anomalous production of four-top-quark events. All these physics processes have been searched for using an ambitious search strategy that has been developed on the basis of a combination of state-of-art theoretical predictions and a sophisticated statistical analysis to constrain in-situ the large background uncertainties. As a result, the most restrictive bounds to date on the above physics processes have been obtained.

Jet Substructure For The Lhc written by Martin David Jankowiak and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with categories.

The discovery of new physics at the LHC hinges on our ability to discriminate the old (the Standard Model) from the new. The study of the substructure of jets offers a powerful set of techniques for improving the reach of new physics searches at the LHC. Moreover, jet substructure observables are a sensitive probe of QCD dynamics and motivate a variety of tests of QCD. This thesis explores several jet substructure techniques with a particular focus on applications to event discrimination. First, a jet observable is introduced that probes the color structure of pairs of subjets. This observable is incorporated into a top tagging algorithm, where it is shown to improve discrimination between top jets and QCD jets. Second, an alternative approach to jet substructure is introduced that is distinct from the prevailing methods based on the clustering trees induced by sequential jet algorithms. This approach makes use of two-particle angular correlations to identify substructure within jets. In one application, this approach is used to construct a top tagging algorithm that is competitive with existing methods. In another application, ensemble averages of angular correlations are used to study the underlying event and pile-up effects.

We currently live in the golden age of experimental particle physics. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) finally discovered the Higgs particle and may soon allow us to probe TeVscale new physics. Moreover, dark matter indirect detection experiments may have found annihilation products in our galaxy while the direct detection experiments keep improving their upper bounds on dark matter interactions with ordinary matter. That being said, the current efforts to discover any physics beyond the standard model have failed. We thus need to come up with better models and better tools to probe new physics. This thesis which collects the author's PhD research papers is an effort in this direction. We begin by showing how singular dark matter self-interaction can significantly enhance dark matter annihilation in today's Universe. Then we explore a concrete dark matter model where a particle called the dilaton mediate the interactions between the dark sector and the standard model. Finally we devise a new method to discern heavy boosted particles from QCD jets at the LHC.

Advances In Jet Substructure At The Lhc written by Roman Kogler and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-10 with Science categories.

This book introduces the reader to the field of jet substructure, starting from the basic considerations for capturing decays of boosted particles in individual jets, to explaining state-of-the-art techniques. Jet substructure methods have become ubiquitous in data analyses at the LHC, with diverse applications stemming from the abundance of jets in proton-proton collisions, the presence of pileup and multiple interactions, and the need to reconstruct and identify decays of highly-Lorentz boosted particles. The last decade has seen a vast increase in our knowledge of all aspects of the field, with a proliferation of new jet substructure algorithms, calculations and measurements which are presented in this book. Recent developments and algorithms are described and put into the larger experimental context. Their usefulness and application are shown in many demonstrative examples and the phenomenological and experimental effects influencing their performance are discussed. A comprehensive overview is given of measurements and searches for new phenomena performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. This book shows the impressive versatility of jet substructure methods at the LHC.
