This is an open access book. The ultimate goal of physical education and physical activity promotion is to facilitate and encourage individuals to engage in a physically active lifestyle. It can be achieved by improving physical literacy, which is defined as ‘the ability of individuals to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities, in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development and overall quality of life of the whole person.’ Prior to developing strategies for improving physical literacy, its concept needs to be defined and conceptualized because it involves complex interplays of individuals’ knowledge and understanding of physical activity as well as individuals’ motivation, self-confidence and physical competence for being physically active for life. The 6th Yogyakarta International Seminar on Health, Physical Education, and Sports Science (YISHPESS 2023) respond to this issue by organising the conference which carries a theme of "Lessening the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles through the use of physical education resources”. The Conference invites reputable international scholars and experts closely working in physical literacy, physical education and sports science in general.

Literacies, Literature and Learning: Reading Classrooms Differently attends to pressing questions in literacy education, such as the poor quality of many children’s experiences as readers, routine disregard for their thinking and the degrading impact of narrow skills measurement and comparison. This cutting-edge book moves beyond social, psychological and scientific categories that focus on individualistic and linear notions of the knowing subject; of progress and development; and of child as less than fully human. It adopts a posthumanist framework to explore new perspectives for teaching, learning and research. Authors from diverse disciplines and continents have collaborated to interrogate the colonising characteristics of humanism and to imagine a different – more just - reading of a literacy classroom. Questions of de/colonisation are tackled through the exploration of both education and research practices that seek to de-centre the human and include the more than human. Inspired by an example of high quality children’s literature, playful philosophical teaching and the power of the material, the authors show how the chapters diffract with one another, thereby opening up radical possibilities for a different doing of childhood. The book hopes to help transform adult-child relationships in schools and universities. As such, it should be of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the areas of literacy, philosophy, law, education, the wider social sciences, the arts, health sciences and architecture. It should also be essential reading for teacher educators and practitioners around the world.

The health and physical education learning area is about taking action to enhance well-being. It encompasses three different but related subjects - health education, physical education, and home economics - with a shared conceptual framework and achievement objectives. Physical education is the process that uses physical activity as a means to help people acquire skills, health, fitness, knowledge and attitudes that contribute to their optimal development and well-being. It plays an important role in the development of an individual just as a school room education does. In order to have a quality Physical education at all levels it is essential to have a qualitative scientific literature/information on various aspects of physical education. The present book is a step in this direction which has been designed as both a text and a resource in physical education. As a text it will prepare undergraduates in Physical education courses. As a resource it may serve variety of individuals such as teachers, coaches, volunteers and other professionals. In our society sport fulfils important functions and is indeed indispensable. It offers opportunities for physical activity in a world where physical activity is increasingly diminishing; it promotes good health and well-being; and it provides a means of social contact and ample opportunity for intensive experiences. Aim of this book is a careful selection of the important aspects of physical administration written by the authorities on the subject through the ages. Selection is mainly oriented to the requirement of the teachers and students of physical education.

In just over a hundred years--from the death of Muhammad in 632 to the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate in 750--the followers of the Prophet swept across the whole of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain. Their armies threatened states as far afield as the Franks in Western Europe and the Tang Empire in China. The conquered territory was larger than the Roman Empire at its greatest expansion, and it was claimed for the Arabs in roughly half the time. How this collection of Arabian tribes was able to engulf so many empires, states, and armies in such a short period of time is a question that has perplexed historians for centuries. Most recent popular accounts have been based almost solely on the early Muslim sources, which were composed centuries later for the purpose of demonstrating that God had chosen the Arabs as his vehicle for spreading Islam throughout the world. In this ground-breaking new history, distinguished Middle East expert Robert G. Hoyland assimilates not only the rich biographical and geographical information of the early Muslim sources but also the many non-Arabic sources, contemporaneous or near-contemporaneous with the conquests. The story of the conquests traditionally begins with the revelation of Islam to Muhammad. In God's Path, however, begins with a broad picture of the Late Antique world prior to the Prophet's arrival, a world dominated by the two superpowers of Byzantium and Sasanian Persia, "the two eyes of the world." In between these empires, in western (Saudi) Arabia, emerged a distinct Arab identity, which helped weld its members into a formidable fighting force. The Arabs are the principal actors in this drama yet, as Hoyland shows, the peoples along the edges of Byzantium and Persia--the Khazars, Bulgars, Avars, and Turks--also played important roles in the remaking of the old world order. The new faith propagated by Muhammad and his successors made it possible for many of the conquered peoples to join the Arabs in creating the first Islamic Empire. Well-paced and accessible, In God's Path presents a pioneering new narrative of one the great transformational periods in all of history.
