The book is devoted to various disciplines in satisfiability research and aims to give the reader an impression of the state of the art of this research in the year 2000. It consists of a compilation of articles on this subject which have appeared, or will appear in the periodicals. The disciplines covered fall (not entirely neatly) into four categories: complete methods, stochastic methods, applications and extensions beyond propositional SAT.

It is not unusual for a festschrift to include offerings from several areas of study, but it is highly unusual for those areas to cross disciplinary lines. This book, in doing just that, is a testimony to Bob Abelson's impact on the disciplines of social psychology, artificial intelligence and cognitive science, and the applied areas of political psychology and decision-making. The contributors demonstrate that their association with Abelson, whether as students or colleagues, has resulted in an impressive intellectual cross-fertilization.

Brings together a diversity of research on goal-driven learning to establish a broad, interdisciplinary framework that describes the goal-driven learning process. In cognitive science, artificial intelligence, psychology, and education, a growing body of research supports the view that the learning process is strongly influenced by the learner's goals. The fundamental tenet of goal-driven learning is that learning is largely an active and strategic process in which the learner, human or machine, attempts to identify and satisfy its information needs in the context of its tasks and goals, its prior knowledge, its capabilities, and environmental opportunities for learning. This book brings together a diversity of research on goal-driven learning to establish a broad, interdisciplinary framework that describes the goal-driven learning process. It collects and solidifies existing results on this important issue in machine and human learning and presents a theoretical framework for future investigations. The book opens with an an overview of goal-driven learning research and computational and cognitive models of the goal-driven learning process. This introduction is followed by a collection of fourteen recent research articles addressing fundamental issues of the field, including psychological and functional arguments for modeling learning as a deliberative, planful process; experimental evaluation of the benefits of utility-based analysis to guide decisions about what to learn; case studies of computational models in which learning is driven by reasoning about learning goals; psychological evidence for human goal-driven learning; and the ramifications of goal-driven learning in educational contexts. The second part of the book presents six position papers reflecting ongoing research and current issues in goal-driven learning. Issues discussed include methods for pursuing psychological studies of goal-driven learning, frameworks for the design of active and multistrategy learning systems, and methods for selecting and balancing the goals that drive learning. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing inter-disciplinary field with a long and distinguished history that involves many countries and considerably pre-dates the development of computers. It can be traced back at least as far as Ancient Greece and has evolved over time to become a major subfield of computer science in general. This state-of-the-art survey not only serves as a "position paper" on the field from the viewpoint of expert members of the IFIP Technical Committee 12, its Working Groups and their colleagues, but also presents overviews of current work in different countries. The chapters describe important relatively new or emerging areas of work in which the authors are personally involved, including text and hypertext categorization; autonomous systems; affective intelligence; AI in electronic healthcare systems; artifact-mediated society and social intelligence design; multilingual knowledge management; agents, intelligence and tools; intelligent user profiling; and supply chain business intelligence. They provide an interesting international perspective on where this significant field is going at the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century.
