This is an open access book.Cities are at a crossroads, moving from a traditional development model to an urban regeneration process that promotes a sustainable, inclusive, healthy, innovative and equitable change in dialogue with citizens and nature.Nature for Innovative and Inclusive Urban Regeneration (NATiURB) is a 2-day public event to be held on 16 & 17 June 2022 in Milan. It is the first international conference hosted by URBiNAT.The first day of the conference is a “Cities Conference Day”, organised at the Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, where URBiNAT partner cities will share their experience with regards to the healthy corridor co-created with local communities in their specific intervention area.The second day is a “Scientific Conference Day” to be held at IULM university campus. Within twenty sessions dedicated to the discussion of concepts, methodologies and practices, attendees and presenters will share knowledge and experience from diverse perspectives ranging from academic to urban planning and design to lived experience on the ground.The Scientific Committee is monitoring the gender sensitivity of the conference. Men and women and broader gender diversity are promoted and welcome. This volume focuses on the implementation of the 2011 UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL approach), designed to foster the integration of heritage management in regional and urban planning and management, and strengthen the role of heritage in sustainable urban development.Earlier publications and research looked at the underlying theory of why the HUL approach was needed and how this theory was developed and elaborated by UNESCO. A comprehensive analysis was carried out in consultation with a multitude of actors in the twenty-first-century urban scene and with disciplinary approaches that are available to heritage managers and practitioners to implement the HUL approach.This volume aims to be empirical, describing, analyzing, and comparing 28 cities taken as case studies to implement the HUL approach. From those cases, many lessons can be learned and much guidance shared on best practices concerning what can be done to make the HUL approach work.Whereas the previous studies served to illustrate issues and challenges, in this volume the studies point to innovations in regional and urban planning and management that can allow cities to avoid major conflicts and to further develop in competitiveness. This book analyzes the adoption of stakeholders’ engagement in various fields and scales while providing the readers with an international outlook of the topic. In the contemporary processes of urban development, regeneration is becoming a relevant way to limit the occupation of new land and to enhance the existing spatial, social, and ecological dimensions of specific parts of the city. It generally entails the engagement of different groups of stakeholders and users at various levels—e.g., institutional and private—who carry on their own agendas while conveying a wide range of interests and values to safeguard. At the same time, despite indications of a significant increase in its implementation under various forms and in multiple contexts in the last twenty years, participatory mechanisms have not been without challenges and barriers due to several factors, including facilitators’ poor negotiation and communication practices, and consequently misinterpretation of the values at stake made by the parties involved, or obstructionism and gridlocks carried on by the different stakeholders.
