Essential reading about a notoriously difficult problem: how abusive professionals manipulate their clients and what we as organizations and individuals can do about it Professional sexual misconduct (PSM) is a problem that is notoriously difficult to address and that can be a minefield for all concerned - for victims, for the institutions where it takes place, and also because outstanding and supposedly responsible members of society may be accused of abuse. Here, Werner Tschan, one of the world's leading experts on the prevention of PSM, outlines an up-to-date approach to PSM and other professional disruptive behaviors. He describes practical ways to prevent PSM, as well as effective treatments for victims and those accused. Using examples from real-life cases from around the world, he also discusses how PSM is a societal problem and what we can do to stop it. Recent headline cases involving a variety of organizations - medical, media, church, schools, sport, industry - show that institutions can be ideal environments for PSM and so great emphasis is placed in this volume on preventive measures that we can and must take at an institutional level. With clear, jargon-free writing, this book is essential reading for all professionals interested in preventing and dealing with PSM, as well as of interest to victims and their families as well.

This book represents the first comprehensive resource manual for understanding and preventing sexual harassment in the academic community and in the workplace. Studies indicate that sexual harassment is at epidemic proportions in the academy and in the workplace: from 30%–70% of women in U.S. colleges and universities experience some form of sexual harassment (including sexual assaults) each year; a University of Massachusetts study reports 13% of undergraduate women were raped by acquaintances; and 50% of women in the workplace report serious sexual harassment from supervisors and fellow employees. This manual provides the results of research and of practical, effective experience in reducing the occurrence of sexual harassment, investigating complaints, and providing counseling and remedies for the victims. In addition, the authors have compiled bibliographies, audio-visual material, and pedagogical techniques for dealing with sexual harassment in the academy and in the workplace, as well as information and workshop techniques to facilitate training programs.

Over the last few decades, research, activity, and funding has been devoted to improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. In recent years the diversity of those participating in these fields, particularly the participation of women, has improved and there are significantly more women entering careers and studying science, engineering, and medicine than ever before. However, as women increasingly enter these fields they face biases and barriers and it is not surprising that sexual harassment is one of these barriers. Over thirty years the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady, yet now more women are in the workforce and in academia, and in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine (as students and faculty) and so more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. Over the last several years, revelations of the sexual harassment experienced by women in the workplace and in academic settings have raised urgent questions about the specific impact of this discriminatory behavior on women and the extent to which it is limiting their careers. Sexual Harassment of Women explores the influence of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. This report reviews the research on the extent to which women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine are victimized by sexual harassment and examines the existing information on the extent to which sexual harassment in academia negatively impacts the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women pursuing scientific, engineering, technical, and medical careers. It also identifies and analyzes the policies, strategies and practices that have been the most successful in preventing and addressing sexual harassment in these settings.

Sexual Harassment On College Campuses written by Michele A. Paludi and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-03-01 with Social Science categories.

Based on her work as a private consultant, Michele A. Paludi recognized the need for an updated version of her book Ivory Power: Sexual Harassment on Campus. This need for a second edition was not only facilitated by updated case law, but also by the considerable work published since the first edition concerning training of personnel at colleges and universities and setting up policy statements and effective grievance procedures. Additional attention is devoted to 'consensual relationships' between faculty and students, a topic only touched upon lightly a few years ago. The events of the last few years at Antioch College and the University of Virginia that have stimulated discussion on peer sexual harassment also led to the need for a second edition of Ivory Power. For this edition Dr. Paludi invited the contributors ofIvory Power to update their chapters, focusing on new research, case law, and theory, and new contributors offer their perspectives on sexual harassment in the academic environment. New forewords have been added, most notable are those written by clergy--one a Methodist, one a Roman Catholic--who are dealing with victims of sexual harassment in their parish.

Researching Sex And Lies In The Classroom written by Pat Sikes and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-04 with Education categories.

The Anglophone world is gripped by a moral panic centred on child abuse in general and fear of the paedophile in particular. Evidence suggests an alarming rise in the number of false allegations of sexual abuse being made against teachers, and demonstrates that the fallout from being falsely accused is far-reaching and sometimes tragic. Many people in this position cannot sustain family relationships, have breakdowns, and are often unable to return to the classroom when their ordeal is over. Researching Sex and Lies in the Classroom draws on in-depth qualitative research exploring the experiences, perceptions and consequences for those who have been falsely accused of sexual misconduct with pupils, and for the family members, friends and colleagues affected by or involved in the accusation process. The book also highlights the dilemmas and difficulties the authors themselves have faced researching this field, such as: ethical and methodological concerns over whether or not the teachers had indeed been falsely accused, or were guilty and taking advantage of this project to construct an alternative, innocent identity the difficulty of obtaining institutional ethical clearance to undertake and publish research which challenges master narratives concerning children and their protection the reluctance of funders to support research in controversial and sensitive areas. Researching Sex and Lies in the Classroom reveals findings which are both informative and shocking. It interrogates the appropriateness of current investigative and judicial procedures and practices, and it raises general questions about the surveillance and control of research and academic voice. It will be of great benefit to academics and researchers interested in this field, as well as postgraduate students, teachers and other professionals working with the fear of allegations of abuse.

The Wages Of Seeking Help written by Carol Bohmer and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-03-30 with Health & Fitness categories.

Because women are more likely to seek professional help, and because they are more likely to be the victims of abuse by people in positions of power, women who do seek professional assistance may end up being victims of sexual exploitation by the very people from whom they seek help. Unlike other problems which primarily affect women, such as rape and domestic violence, this issue has received little public attention and has had little success in building a social movement to combat it. Bohmer analyzes the social construction of this unique problem and the response it has received from individuals, groups, and various institutions, such as the law and the regulatory process. Bohmer explains why this problem has a different history from other problems facing primarily women, and why it has not had much success in stirring social movement for addressing the problem. Using other issues of feminist concern, Bohmer connects the problem of professional sexual exploitation to issues of gender and power and shows the ways in which women seeking help are punished for doing so. In addition, the available self-help groups and organizations are examined in light of their benefits and relative lack of success in combating the problem. The legal and regulatory systems in place are also discussed in terms of the ways in which society responds to new social problems as they receive public attention.
