Brazil, Land of the Past scrutinizes the ideological roots of the so-called New Right in Brazil. The book traces the continuity and resilience of a system of thought based on the idea of a God-given hierarchical order to be defended against any social contract and modernizing relativization. It explains in detail how today a diverse movement — which includes actors ranging from the authoritarian Bolsonaro wing to economic liberals to the military to both Catholic and evangelical religious conservatives – assumes unanimously the ideas of this tradition as underlying premises of their political action. Though not always explicitly, this drives the self-declared “liberal-conservative” but rather anti-modernist reaction which claims to liberate an imaginary authentic “Brazil” from an aberrant “State” – and in so doing intends to preserve inherited privilege in an extremely unequal society.

Na pesquisa bibliográfica realizada e no raciocínio desenvolvido ao longo do texto, intenta-se discutir a fundamentação de uma Teoria da Constituição adequada à realidade brasileira, marcada, por sua vez, pela imensa desigualdade social, bem como pela ausência de um Estado (social) capaz de implementar as promessas da modernidade e, consequentemente, de contribuir para a transformação da sofrível condição de vida de seus cidadãos. Para tanto, num primeiro momento, como tentativa de construção de um pano de fundo filosófico-político, aborda-se o pensamento de alguns autores que se destacam atualmente nos estudos sobre a questão do reconhecimento político. A partir dessa base teórica, em seguida, discute-se a necessidade de concretização do projeto iniciado pela Constituição de 1988 que visa, dentre os seus principais objetivos, a ampla efetivação da cidadania no Brasil. Nesse percurso, alguns temas são enfrentados como: o fortalecimento da ideia de Constitucionalismo Dirigente em face dos desafios globais, a necessidade de atuação de um modelo de Estado social, o fomento de um sentimento constitucional (ter e estar em Constituição) para uma ampla camada do povo brasileiro que sofre constantes humilhações políticas e é vítima, no cotidiano, do fenômeno da invisibilidade social. Por fim, em face disso, relaciona-se a teoria política do reconhecimento e o sentimento constitucional como possíveis "remédios" para o chamado sofrimento político.
