Foregrounding African women’s ingenuity and labor, this pioneering case study shows how women in rural Mali have used technology to ensure food security through the colonial period, environmental crises, and postcolonial rule. By advocating for an understanding of rural Malian women as engineers, Laura Ann Twagira rejects the persistent image of African women as subjects without technological knowledge or access and instead reveals a hidden history about gender, development, and improvisation. In so doing, she also significantly expands the scope of African science and technology studies. Using the Office du Niger agricultural project as a case study, Twagira argues that women used modest technologies (such as a mortar and pestle or metal pots) and organized female labor to create, maintain, and reengineer a complex and highly adaptive food production system. While women often incorporated labor-saving technologies into their work routines, they did not view their own physical labor as the problem it is so often framed to be in development narratives. Rather, women’s embodied techniques and knowledge were central to their ability to transform a development project centered on export production into an environmental resource that addressed local taste and consumption needs.

Le présent profil du Burkina Faso en matière de REDD+ sinscrit dans une dynamique danalyse contextuelle, au niveau national, de lopportunité ou des contraintes de sa mise en uvre. Pays sahélien, le Burkina Faso a été choisi comme participant au PIF grâce à son potentiel substantiel de séquestration de carbone des forêts sèches au niveau mondial et à son expérience importante dans la gestion participative des ressources naturelles. Les superficies forestières estimées à 13 305 238 ha subissent une dégradation et une déforestation accélérées sous la double pression humaine et naturelle. La surexploitation et la gestion non durable des forêts amplifiées par lexpansion agricole et le boom minier sont les principaux moteurs de cette dégradation et déforestation. À travers le PIF, le Burkina Faso a élaboré et adopté son R-PP en 2012. Le processus REDD+ bénéficie de politiques et stratégies existantes qui lui sont favorables, mais lanalyse de leur performance à réduire ou favoriser la dégradation et la déforestation des ressources forestières révèle que certaines politiques ont été guidées par une logique de maximisation des retombées socio-économiques plus que de protection de lenvironnement. Lélaboration de la stratégie REDD+, sa mise en uvre et sa réussite doivent se nourrir dune évaluation, en termes defficience, defficacité et déquité, des éléments clés que sont : le contexte institutionnel et de gouvernance, la coordination des actions, la participation des acteurs, les mécanismes de MNV, de partage des revenus. Pour ce faire, la mise en uvre des deux projets du PIF constitue un processus dapprentissage et un cadre de réflexion pour la REDD+.
