From the PREFACE: The importance of the study of the emotions in relation to human conduct is well understood. Just how consciousness behaves under the influence of the fundamental human emotions like fear and anger, is one of vital interest to the psychologist and educator. It has always been difficult to study the structural side of our emotions because of an inability to control voluntarily our emotions for purposes of introspection. The structure of emotions is primarily important in so far as structure may allow an interpretation of function. The study of the emotions has for the most part been limited to theoretical discussions based on the observations of normal and abnormal persons and on the casual introspection of individual authors. This work is an attempt to study systematically the emotion of anger in relation to the behavior of consciousness, the ideas and feelings associated in the development of anger, the reactive side of consciousness under the influence of anger, individual differences in behavior, manner of the disappearance and diminution of anger, devices used in the control and facilitation of the emotion, and the conscious after-effects including the inter-relation of anger and other feelings, emotions and attitudes which follow. The education of the emotions was first voiced by Aristotle who indicated that one of the aims of education should be to teach men to be angry aright.

For many years, teachers and educators question themselves about their pedagogic method. Nevertheless, it is possible that the questions one is asking, however pertinent, may be incomplete in that they only cover one aspect of the entire mechanism involved in the learning process. What we realized is that a high percentage of the teaching approaches, and consequently their evaluations, are essentially cognitive. The reason for this is simply because it is said that the learning process is fundamentally cognitive, i.e., that it basically lies on activities involving the treatment of information. Therefore, we can logically conclude that in such instances where a student is struggling to learn, the problem must be cognitive in nature. In this book, we will take a different position or approach. By no means do we mean to imply that the approach that looks to cognitive methodology for learning issues is irrelevant, but instead we feel that it is insufficient and may not address all of the questions related to the learning process and all of the difficulties attached to it. Therefore, we will shift the focus onto a different area of analysis that addresses other parts of the brain, themselves linked to the development of emotional skills. One of the main objectives of this work is essentially to provide us with primary basic theoretical elements of a new vision on teaching and learning. Another logical objective would be to propose tangible and integrated applications of emotional intelligence in our teaching strategies. It is precisely for these reasons, and many more, that this book presents a novel method for understanding learning and teaching processes, a method we call emotional pedagogy, its premise asserting that one's ability to learn can be directly linked to one's emotional awareness.

This personal, creative, critical work from a leading scholar of psychology is rooted in three novel concepts and aims to share critical pedagogy in the spirit of nascent potential found in the context of a colonial Puerto Rico. First comes the idea of ‘pedagogy in (e)motion’, or the emotional matrix of the teaching and learning process. Secondly, the author explores the notion of ‘street pedagogy’ as a genuine and powerful professional tool. And thirdly, the book underscores what Zambrana-Ortiz calls ‘the interconnection of the artscience within the political and biographical act of teaching’. The purpose is to inform education teaching practice with the radical framework that, like the neurosciences, believes emotions to be a vital precursor to the planning of action, the process of decision-making and the broadening of our cognitive parameters. The chapters focus on different and yet complementary dimensions of a college teaching initiative boasting a unique interplay between a transgressive narrative, reinvented methodology and authentic samples of students’ contributions to the project. Traditionally, emotional and visceral experiences have been downplayed and rejected as fundamental components of knowledge. This book makes the case for their reinstatement, and proposes that the pleasure and commitment of teaching itself can be seen as resistance given the challenging social and political context, the bureaucracy of the Puerto Rican higher education system, and the cynicism of the self-confessed cognoscenti who think that little political progress can come from within the university system. Such resistance has proved for the author a source of inspiration and has contributed to her creation and reconceptualization of approaches to critical and useful pedagogy.
