This book explores the potential of specific photographic images for reflecting on experiences of mental disorders. Instead of looking at photographs of (people suffering from) mental disorders, this volume aspires to comprehend the complexities of such conditions through photographic lexicons, metaphors, and practices. For this book, a mental disorder is not to be seen as a dysfunction or impairment, but a state in which the sustaining balance of stable and unstable mind is unsettled, which may induce mental/bodily disturbances. The term “psychosomatic” refers to the interaction of the mind (psyche) with the body (soma); it refers to their co-dependence. By the term “Psychosomatic Imagery” this volume refers to a distinctive trope of photographic images that deal with the body-mind interaction during the states of mental disorders. This novel theoretical framework in photography theory instigates critical discussions about the experiences of mental disorders visualized as disturbed corporeal and mental perceptions of the world. While the introduction of the volume unpacks and assesses the applications of photography in mental disorder studies from theoretical and historical perspectives, the chapters focus on specific cases of Psychosomatic Imagery in contemporary photography. Those cases include, but are not limited to: PTSD, hysteria, paranoia, psychosis, bipolar disorder, and Hikikomori.

This case study observes the influence of mental imagery on an art therapy process with psychosomatic patients and is based on the assumption that combining interactive guided imagery with art therapy, can enhance symbolic functions in psychosomatic patients. First, basic psychodynamic concepts of the somatization process are reviewed, my assumptions on how the art therapy/mental imagery process can benefit psychosomatic patients are presented and the method of interactive guided imagery is explained. In the clinical presentation. the process of two women affected by psychosomatic disturbances is observed. Their art therapy process before and after the integration of interactive guided imagery in their sessions is presented and their art work before and after the combined art/mental imagery process is compared, stimulating questions and reflections on this approach. Though, this case study does not provide conclusions from which generalizations can be drawn, it does demonstrate that using interactive guided imagery in an art therapy process with the two research subjects appears to have had an impact on their symbolic process.

This case study is based on the assumption that using Art Therapy and guided imagery techniques in a therapeutic process with patients affected by psychosomatic conditions can enhance their symbolic functions and facilitate their ability to express their feelings and regulate their affect. A brief review of the history of psychosomatic medicine is offered and basic concepts of the somatization process are presented. In the second half of this paper, the Art Therapy process of two women affected by psychosomatic disturbances is reviewed. The artwork they produced before and after using guided imagery techniques in their Art Therapy sessions is compared. Differences in their artwork between pre and post guided imagery sessions are observed, stimulating questions and reflections on this approach to treatment for psychosomatic patients. Though this case study does not provide conclusions from which generalizations can be drawn, it does demonstrate that this approach did appear to impact the two patients' symbolic expression and did seem to enhance their psychotherapeutic process.
