By adopting a historical perspective, this edited collection of papers takes a fresh look at a key concept in applied linguistics, that of innovation. "Delitto al quadrivio" vede all'opera il commissario Santiago De Candia, il quale dovrà indagare sulla misteriosa morte di un'affermata violinista rumena, ritrovata nella spiaggia del Poetto di Cagliari, nei pressi del "Quadrivio", un ritrovo balneare che ha conosciuto tempi migliori. Con l'aiuto insperato di un'avvenente avvocata, il commissario risolverà brillantemente anche questo caso. Il romanzo si apre con il ritrovamento di un cadavere nella spiaggia del Poetto di Cagliari. Il difensore di turno, l'avvocato Luisa Levi viene convocata sul luogo del delitto. A sentire i Carabinieri e la Procura il caso è bell'e chiuso e l'assassino già assicurato alla giustizia. Si tratta di un pregiudicato, con precedenti specifici, che è stato arrestato in quasi flagranza di reato e che all'avvocato Levi toccherà difendere contro le apparenze che lo vogliono colpevole. In realtà, come spiega l'avvocato Levi nel ricorso al Tribunale della libertà, nei polmoni della vittima non ci sono tracce di iodio; inoltre la vittima aveva un abbigliamento incompatibile con una passeggiata serale in riva al mare. Anche il commissario De Candia intravvede che la realtà è assai diversa da quella comodamente battuta dalla Procura, che ha scelto un capro espiatorio con cui archiviare e risolvere un caso di omicidio volontario tutt'altro che semplice. Con una inedita sinergia di intelligenza e intuito, i due faranno emergere la verità, scagionando lo sfortunato incriminato e inaugurando una nuova collaborazione, fatta anche di complicità personale.

Between 1917 to 1975 Germany, Italy, Portugal, the Soviet Union, and Spain shifted from liberal parliamentary democracies to authoritarian and totalitarian dictatorships, seeking total control, mass consensus, and the constitution of a 'new man/woman' as the foundation of a modern collective social identity. As they did so these regimes uniformly adopted what we would call a modernist aesthetic – huge-scale experiments in modernism were funded and supported by fascist and totalitarian dictators. Famous examples include Mussolini's New Rome at EUR, or the Stalinist apartment blocks built in urban Russia. Focusing largely on Mussolini's Italy, Francesca Billiani argues that modernity was intertwined irrecoverably with fascism – that too often modernist buildings, art and writings are seen as a purely cultural output, when in fact the principles of modernist aesthetics constitute and are constituted by the principles of fascism. The obsession with the creation of the 'new man' in art and in reality shows this synergy at work. This book is a key contribution to the field of twentieth century history – particularly in the study of fascism, while also appealing to students of art history and philosophy.
