Evolutionary quantitative genetics (EQG) provides a formal theoretical foundation for quantitatively linking natural selection and genetic variation to the rate and expanse of adaptive evolution. It has become the dominant conceptual framework for interpreting the evolution of quantitative traits in terms of elementary forces (mutation, inheritance, selection, and drift). Despite this success, the relevance of EQG to many biological scenarios remains relatively unappreciated, with numerous fields yet to fully embrace its approach. Part of the reason for this lag is that conceptual advances in EQG have not yet been fully synthesized and made accessible to a wider academic audience. A comprehensive, accessible overview is therefore now timely, and Evolutionary Quantitative Genetics provides this much-needed synthesis. The central argument of the book is that an adaptive landscape concept can be used to understand both evolutionary process within lineages and the pattern of adaptive radiations. In particular, it provides a convincing argument that models with a moving adaptive peak carry us further than any other conceptual approach yet devised. Although additive theory holds center stage, the book mentions and references departures from additivity including non-Gaussian distributions of allelic effects, dominance, epistasis, maternal effects and phenotypic plasticity. This accessible, advanced textbook is aimed principally at students (from senior undergraduate to postgraduate) as well as practising scientists in the fields of evolutionary biology, ecology, physiology, functional morphology, developmental biology, comparative biology, paleontology, and beyond who are interested in how adaptive radiations are produced by evolutionary and ecological processes.

About the Book: This book deals with the problems of students, teachers and researchers associated with the subject of genetics, plant and animal breeding. Basic concepts necessary to explain statistical measures and analysis of data are also incorporated. Path analysis, heritability, repeatability, genotypic and phenotypic correlations, analysis of breeding experiments by Hayman's approach and otherwise, combining ability analysis for Griffing's models, line x tester analysis, stability analysis etc., are explicated theoretically and also by demonstrating thoroughly worked examples. This book will also bridge the gap between consulting statisticians and breeders. In a broader sense this book is good for students and researchers in the areas of biology, plant breeding, animal breeding, etc., in multifarious ways. Contents: Basics of Genetics Path Analysis Heritability and Repeatability Breeding and Data Analysis Combining Ability Analysis Stability Analysis.

Evolution And Selection Of Quantitative Traits written by Bruce Walsh and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-21 with Science categories.

Quantitative traits-be they morphological or physiological characters, aspects of behavior, or genome-level features such as the amount of RNA or protein expression for a specific gene-usually show considerable variation within and among populations. Quantitative genetics, also referred to as the genetics of complex traits, is the study of such characters and is based on mathematical models of evolution in which many genes influence the trait and in which non-genetic factors may also be important. Evolution and Selection of Quantitative Traits presents a holistic treatment of the subject, showing the interplay between theory and data with extensive discussions on statistical issues relating to the estimation of the biologically relevant parameters for these models. Quantitative genetics is viewed as the bridge between complex mathematical models of trait evolution and real-world data, and the authors have clearly framed their treatment as such. This is the second volume in a planned trilogy that summarizes the modern field of quantitative genetics, informed by empirical observations from wide-ranging fields (agriculture, evolution, ecology, and human biology) as well as population genetics, statistical theory, mathematical modeling, genetics, and genomics. Whilst volume 1 (1998) dealt with the genetics of such traits, the main focus of volume 2 is on their evolution, with a special emphasis on detecting selection (ranging from the use of genomic and historical data through to ecological field data) and examining its consequences.

Applied Quantitative Genetics written by Manjit S. Kang and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Genetics categories.

APPLIED QUANTITATIVE GENETICS resulted from several years of teaching a graduate course on Quantitative Genetics in Plant Improvement. This book fills a critical need in that it presents topics for students from a practical standpoint & makes available some essential computer software. The book should also be useful to teachers & researchers in the areas of quantitative genetics & plant breeding. This publication covers the following topics: 1. Gene Action, genetic variances & effects, & mean; 2. Inbreeding & mating designs; 3. Diallel analyses; 4 . Generation mean analysis; 5. North Carolina designs I, II, III; 6. Path coefficient analysis; 7. Heritability & selection; 8. Heterosis; 9. Genotype-by- environment interaction & stability analyses; & 10. Locating quantitative trait loci. The book places special emphasis on Diallel analyses, Stability analyses, & locating quantitative trait loci; these three important topics either have not been covered at all or have been inadequately covered in currently available texts. The book is available for $28.50 (shipping & handling included) to individuals or libraries. For students or for orders of four or more copies, the cost is $24.50 per book. Payment in full may be sent to Dr. M. S. Kang, 2477 Creekside Dr., Baton Rouge, LA 70810- 6966.
