Quantum Poetics examines the way modernist poets appropriated scientific metaphors as part of a general search for the pre-verbal origins of poetry. Daniel Albright traces Modernism's search for the elementary particles from which poems were constructed. The poetic possibilities offered by developments in scientific discourse intrigued Yeats, Eliot and Pound, writers intent on remapping the general theory of poetry. Using models supplied by physicists, Yeats sought for the basic units of poetic force, both through his sequence A Vision and through his belief in, and defence of, the purity of symbols. Pound's whole critical vocabulary, Albright claims, aims at drawing art and science together in a search for poetic precision, the tiniest textual particles that held poems together. Through a series of patient and original readings, Quantum Poetics demonstrates how modernists created a whole new way of thinking about poetry and science as two different aspects of the same quest.

Looking at her own modern epic, A Hospital Odyssey, she questions how form is essential to health. 'What Country, Friends, is This?': Using Illyria in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night as a starting point, this lecture explores language politics and writing, describing how far poets will go to negotiate safe passage between one and the other. Fluent in Welsh and English, Gwyneth Lewis reflects on writing in two opposed traditions at the same time and reflects on what light the work of poets such as Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill and Anne Carson, among others, throws on the nature of poetry as a whole. She interrogates our means of observation and measurement (the telescope, the ice-core), our mappings, our cosmic calculations, our assumptions about cause and effect. In a time of displacement such as ours, she seems to say, in place of "universals" we must imagine "multiversals," in place of the fixed, the metamorphic. This book advances the notion of autotextuality, the dialogue between works in an author’s oeuvre, and the ways in which new texts are created in self-repetition through the tracing and revisiting of past texts and the subsequent uncovering of undisclosed meanings, unexhausted constructive principles, and alternative versions. Kolarov draws on cognitive models, such as dual coding theory and conceptual blending, to substantiate a theory of autotextuality and build on previous work on self-repetition and difference to highlight the notion of “discursive desire,” in which new meanings are generated through repetition, and its distinct relationship to creativity. Drawing on analyses of well-established works in Bulgarian as well as the established oeuvres of such authors as Gogol, Dostoevsky, Kafka, and Baudelaire, the volume explores key themes in autotextuality such as the functions of creative memory, the connections between word and image, and the hermeneutic relationships and steps of transformation between texts.
