Intorno al 1980 si aveva la chiara percezione che un capitolo di teatro musicale italiano si stesse chiudendo inesorabilmente e, dopo un quarto di secolo, non possiamo non confermarla. Così come in campo teatrale stava tramontando la stagione delle “cantine” e si riaffermava la tradizione degli Stabili, il nuovo teatro musicale aveva esaurito le sue potenzialità di sperimentazione mentre riprendevano quota criteri drammaturgici ed espressivi del melodramma storico. Dopo anni di forte tensione creativa nella ricerca di una partitura complessiva teatrale-musicale, spesso però di difficile comprensione, i “neoromantici” resuscitavano l’opera lirica, i suoi pezzi chiusi e la comunicazione con il pubblico. I pregiudizi di carattere linguistico cadevano e si apriva una fase in cui tutto era possibile. Arrivava il “riflusso” che archiviava gli “anni di piombo” seguiti a quelli “della contestazione”, durante i quali aveva avuto diritto di cittadinanza solo l'”impegno” ed era considerato eresia andare al teatro d’opera per rilassarsi. L’ultima leva dei compositori mostrava un desiderio ricorrente di cimentarsi con la scena mentre la generazione dei loro maestri aveva spesso manifestato una sofferta rinunzia in campo teatrale. Dunque, per fissare quel mondo che aveva segnato un ventennio della nostra storia musicale e che stava per essere sostituito da quello post-moderno, era necessaria una “foto di gruppo”, cioè un’intervista con le medesime domande rivolte ai compositori più rappresentativi di quel momento chiave. Hanno risposto all’invito: Luciano Berio, Niccolò Castiglioni, Giuseppe Chiari, Azio Corghi, Franco Donatoni, Lorenzo Ferrero, Vittorio Gelmetti, Gaetano Giani Luporini, Domenico Guaccero, Marcello Panni, Gino Negri, Paolo Renosto, Salvatore Sciarrino, Camillo Togni.

Between 1955 and 1975 music theatre became a central preoccupation for European composers digesting the consequences of the revolutionary experiments in musical language that followed the end of the Second World War. This volume brings together leading specialists from across Europe to offer a new appraisal of the genre. It is structured according to six themes that investigate: the relation of new music theatre to earlier and contemporaneous theories of drama; the use of new technologies; the relation of new music theatre to progressive politics; the role of new venues and environments; the advancement of new conceptions of the performer; and the challenges that new music theatre lays down for music analysis. Contributing authors address canonical works by composers such as Berio, Birtwistle, Henze, Kagel, Ligeti, Nono, and Zimmermann, but also expand the field to figures and artistic developments not regularly represented in existing music histories.
