Hailed as the most popular Industrial band of all time, Nine Inch Nails is a rather odd group, as it has only one true member: Trent Reznor. Though supported in concert by a band consisting of regular backup musicians, NIN is Reznor's brainchild, his baby, his masterpiece. It was this, along with its style, that made the band truly unique. Along with bands such as Ministry, they defined both a genre and a musical generation. Back in the 90s, when other industrial bands were focused on making postmodern-esque electronic noise, Reznor moved to the beat of his own drum, writing melodic and lyrical songs which, while they skirted the edge of pop music, could still be considered to very much keep with the 'industrial' genre. Indeed, one could argue that Reznor was one of the largest influences on the evolution of the Industrial genre during this period.

Maroon 5 is an alternative-rock band formed in Los Angeles, CA and is composed of members Adam Levine (vocals and guitar), James Valentine (guitar), Jesse Carmichael (keyboard), Mickey Madden (bass guitar), and Matt Flynn (drums). They haven’t always been the platinum-selling band that they are now. Rather, the members of Maroon 5 started out like any other band did: in a garage. More specifically, Jesse Carmichael’s garage in Malibu, CA. They also didn’t start with the moniker of Maroon 5: Previously, they were Kara’s Flowers. It wasn’t until after a handful of changes in band members, a few deals (including Reprise Records and Warner Brothers), and a cross country trip for Adam and Jesse that they officially adopted a new name of Maroon 5 in 2001. Maroon 5 released their first album in mid-2002, then hit the road on the Jeep World Outside tour with other notable up-and-comers like Train and O.A.R. and with Sheryl Crow headlining. After that tour, they opened for John Mayer in early 2003. Guitarist James Valentine had actually become friends with John Mayer back in 1996 at Berklee College of Music. When they ran into each other again in 2002, John Mayer listened to Maroon 5’s music and loved it, so he invited them to go on tour with him. Maroon 5 didn’t stop touring there, though. In fact, they continued touring for almost two more years, bringing their total time spent non-stop on the road to a little more than three years! One of the band’s favorite experiences during this time was opening for The Rolling Stones.

ABOUT THE BOOK Pink Floyd's progressive and psychedelic rock sound, most famously featured on concept albums like The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall, have given them astounding critical and commercial success. When lead songwriter Syd Barrett succumbed to drugs and mental illness and left the band, the subsequent power struggle between artistically controlling frontman Roger Waters and guitarist David Gilmour led to one of the most famous feuds in rock-n-roll history. The band was originally composed of Roger Waters (bass), Nick Mason (drums) and Richard Wright (piano/keyboard), who all met while studying at Regent Street Polytechnic in London. 17-year-old Roger Syd Barrett, a childhood friend of Waters, joined the group in 1964. Barrett named the group Pink Floyd by combining the names of two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. MEET THE AUTHOR Sarah Bruhns graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Creative Writing. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The Wall is a sprawling rock opera that explores abandonment, conformity, isolation and emotional numbness. The albums lyrics are cyclical as a reflection of inevitability a sentence (Isn't this where ) begins at the very end of the album, and is finished (we came in?) at the very beginning. The story is arranged around a character named Pink, who loses his father in war, is tormented at school, and eventually as a rock star, builds a literal and figurative wall to protect himself from the outside world. During stage shows, the band played behind a gradually constructed wall, and giant inflatable pigs floated above the stadium. The band performed The Wall only 29 times in New York, Los Angeles and London. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK On "What You Want": Lee had struggled with what she really wanted to do musically and with her life between the albums The Open Door and Evanescence. What You Want was a reminder to her fans and to herself that the band was her main focus and thats what she wanted her life to be about again. The video was shot in New York and featured Lee walking down the Brooklyn Bridge while reminiscing about the past. At the end, she jumps off the bridge and is met safely at the bottom by her bandmates. They then walk off together to forge a new musical destiny. On "Sweet Sacrifice": The opening lyrics of the song clearly reference being freed from the confines of an ugly relationship. The unchaining refers to finally breaking free of the unhealthy emotional ties that keep people in romances that are toxic to them. The next verse then addresses gathering the courage to face your fears and break away from those who hurt you. The song also addresses the abuser with lines such as you know you live to break me and you love to hate me, dont you, honey? Instead of becoming a sacrifice to the altar of a lovers cruelty, the song preaches breaking away and taking a stand for oneself. However, Jagger will turn sixty-nine years old this year, the same year the Rolling Stones are celebrating their fiftieth anniversary as "the greatest rock and roll band in the world." Perhaps in spite of himself, Jagger is still performing...and yes, still singing "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." The Rolling Stones, originally composed of members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ian Stewart (Stu) were formed in Great Britain in 1962 by members Jagger, Richards, and Jones. The Rolling Stones were influenced, as were many other British rock bands, by American music: Blues, jazz, R&B (rhythm and blues), and rock and roll. Aesthetically pitted against The Beatles "boy next door" image, the Stones were marketed as "the bad boys" of rock. As the anonymous and origin-less saying goes, "The Stones want to spend the night together while the Beatles just want to hold your hand." Encouraged and cultivated by their flamboyant band manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, the Rolling Stones' bad boy image became a defining characteristic of the band. Fleetwood Mac is a rare rock band breed. Their musical triumphs are vast and storied, but their inner, soap opera relationships are just as legendary as their hit records. The band originally formed with Mick Fleetwood, John and Christine McVie in 1967. But it wasn’t until 1975 that guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and then-girlfriend and musical partner, Stevie Nicks, joined and the best-known incarnation of the group came together. Looking to replace recently departed guitarist, Bob Welch, Fleetwood heard Buckingham-Nicks’ self-titled album, and liked it enough to ask for an introduction to Buckingham. The new lineup included three members who could write songs and sing lead vocals - Christine McVie, Buckingham and Nicks, who all brought different sensibilities to their lyrics. The new band broke through with the self-titled album, Fleetwood Mac (1975), which sold over five million copies.

Neil Kingsblood is a white middle-class man who discovers, while researching his family background, that he is directly descended from an African adventurer on the American frontier. Through various machinations, Kingsblood loses his banking job and takes a lesser one. He begins to be treated differently by former acquaintances, despite the lack of visible black African ancestry. He is forced to choose between continuing what he has come to see as a hollow existence in the white community and taking on the oppressed minority status of the black community. After Kingsblood tells several white friends about his newfound ancestry, the news quickly spreads, and he finds that acquaintances change their behavior toward him. He engages in a quixotic struggle against the racism newly apparent but widespread in his community.
