Mick Jagger, lead singer of the Rolling Stones, once famously said that he'd "rather be dead than sing "Satisfaction" when (he's) forty-five." However, Jagger will turn sixty-nine years old this year, the same year the Rolling Stones are celebrating their fiftieth anniversary as "the greatest rock and roll band in the world." Perhaps in spite of himself, Jagger is still performing...and yes, still singing "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." The Rolling Stones, originally composed of members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ian Stewart (Stu) were formed in Great Britain in 1962 by members Jagger, Richards, and Jones. The Rolling Stones were influenced, as were many other British rock bands, by American music: Blues, jazz, R&B (rhythm and blues), and rock and roll. Aesthetically pitted against The Beatles "boy next door" image, the Stones were marketed as "the bad boys" of rock. As the anonymous and origin-less saying goes, "The Stones want to spend the night together while the Beatles just want to hold your hand." Encouraged and cultivated by their flamboyant band manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, the Rolling Stones' bad boy image became a defining characteristic of the band. In fact, one press campaign in particular led to the writing of a famous headline: "Would you let your daughter go with a Rolling Stone?"

Maroon 5 is an alternative-rock band formed in Los Angeles, CA and is composed of members Adam Levine (vocals and guitar), James Valentine (guitar), Jesse Carmichael (keyboard), Mickey Madden (bass guitar), and Matt Flynn (drums). They haven’t always been the platinum-selling band that they are now. Rather, the members of Maroon 5 started out like any other band did: in a garage. More specifically, Jesse Carmichael’s garage in Malibu, CA. They also didn’t start with the moniker of Maroon 5: Previously, they were Kara’s Flowers. It wasn’t until after a handful of changes in band members, a few deals (including Reprise Records and Warner Brothers), and a cross country trip for Adam and Jesse that they officially adopted a new name of Maroon 5 in 2001. Maroon 5 released their first album in mid-2002, then hit the road on the Jeep World Outside tour with other notable up-and-comers like Train and O.A.R. and with Sheryl Crow headlining. After that tour, they opened for John Mayer in early 2003. Guitarist James Valentine had actually become friends with John Mayer back in 1996 at Berklee College of Music. When they ran into each other again in 2002, John Mayer listened to Maroon 5’s music and loved it, so he invited them to go on tour with him. Maroon 5 didn’t stop touring there, though. In fact, they continued touring for almost two more years, bringing their total time spent non-stop on the road to a little more than three years! One of the band’s favorite experiences during this time was opening for The Rolling Stones.

It's an extraordinarily well-respected pop song, loved by many people who would not agree with the songs anti-government, socialist, and anti-religious message, but who love its sense of optimism and its uplifting musical quality. ABOUT THE BOOK Pink Floyd's progressive and psychedelic rock sound, most famously featured on concept albums like The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall, have given them astounding critical and commercial success. When lead songwriter Syd Barrett succumbed to drugs and mental illness and left the band, the subsequent power struggle between artistically controlling frontman Roger Waters and guitarist David Gilmour led to one of the most famous feuds in rock-n-roll history. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The Wall is a sprawling rock opera that explores abandonment, conformity, isolation and emotional numbness. The albums lyrics are cyclical as a reflection of inevitability a sentence (Isn't this where ) begins at the very end of the album, and is finished (we came in?) at the very beginning. The story is arranged around a character named Pink, who loses his father in war, is tormented at school, and eventually as a rock star, builds a literal and figurative wall to protect himself from the outside world. During stage shows, the band played behind a gradually constructed wall, and giant inflatable pigs floated above the stadium. The band performed The Wall only 29 times in New York, Los Angeles and London. Fleetwood Mac is a rare rock band breed. Their musical triumphs are vast and storied, but their inner, soap opera relationships are just as legendary as their hit records. The band originally formed with Mick Fleetwood, John and Christine McVie in 1967. Hailed as the most popular Industrial band of all time, Nine Inch Nails is a rather odd group, as it has only one true member: Trent Reznor. But Rihanna had something else. Perhaps inspired by her oft-cited idol Madonna, she has demonstrated an ability to shapeshift in a way that is always uncannily ahead of the trend.
