This book presents a new study of one of the major themes of the Qur'an. The theme of Qur'anic pictures of the universe treated here pertains to as yet a little explored facet of Islamic cosmology. The book offers many new insights that will prove particularly helpful to those interested in deepening their understanding of Qur'anic perspectives on cosmology, the natural sciences, and religion and science.Osman Bakar, who earned a doctorate in Islamic philosophy from Temple University, Philadelphia, is currently Distinguished Professor and Director of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Centre for Islamic Studies (SOASCIS) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam. He was formerly Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & Research) of University of Malaya, Malaysia Chair of Southeast Asian Islam at the Prince Talal al-Waleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University, Washington DC, and Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO), International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies, Malaysia (IAIS). An Emeritus Professor of Philosophy of Science at the Department of Science and Technology Studies, University of Malaya, he was also the founder of the university's Center for Civilizational Dialogue (1996). Dr Bakar is an author of 20 books and more than 300 articles on various aspects of Islamic thought and civilization, particularly Islamic science and philosophy and Islam in Southeast Asia. He was a member of the Council of 100 Leaders of the West-Islamic World Initiative for Dialogue founded by the World Economic Forum, Davos, Switzerland. He has been named several times among the 500 most influential Muslims in the world (including the latest 2016 edition). In 1994 he was made a Dato' by HH the Sultan of Pahang and in 2000 a Datuk by the Malaysian King. His two most well-known books, Classification of Knowledge in Islam and Tawhid and Science, have been translated into numerous languages. His latest books are Islamic Civilization and the Modern World: Thematic Essays (2014) and Islamic Perspectives on Science and Technology (co-editor, 2016).

The 35:4 AJISS issue opens with an editorial that draws attention to the plight of the Uyghur Muslims of East Turkestan facing sustained Chinese government persecution. The issue then features two main articles. The first article, by Dr. Mohammad Syifa Amin Widigdo, argues that the Aristotelian dialectic was adopted within medieval Islamic theology and law and Christian scholasticism toward distinctive purposes: the Greeks aimed to defeat an opponent by showing logical contradictions, Christian scholastics searched for the truth by bringing out the preexisting truth in the mind of the teacher, and Muslim dialecticians employed it to arrive at a level of certainty in knowledge in both epistemological and psychological senses. The second article reports multi-author empirical research by Drs. Bartkowski, Acevedo, Karakeci, and Campbell on the analysis of data extracted from the World Values Survey. It investigates early twenty-first century religious influences on Turkish Muslim women’s attitudes toward gender inequality, hypothesizing that religious devotion among Muslim women in Turkey is associated with greater support for gender inequality across the institutional domains of family. Finally, following the book reviews, the issue includes an extensive and erudite response by Professor Sherman Jackson to some crucial and timely issues raised by Professor Kecia Ali, who has argued that Muslim male scholars often omit, overlook, undervalue, or dismiss the scholarly views and interventions of female scholars. Jackson’s response is thoughtful, engaging, and respectful, even if it refuses to grant the premise of Ali’s argument.

The scientific explanation of the origin of the Universe is that of a Big Bang. However, The Quranic verses indicate that the universe is an "uninterrupted sequence from origin until the end" within a specific time span. The verses further reveal that everything in the material universe is inter-connected through "tracks and pathways" (possibly providing for instant communication and travel), and could be the same as 'wormholes' that scientists speak of. As commonly understood, the human body is a part of earthly evolution (created from clay). However, The Quran states that the infusion of ‘Nafs’ in the mother’s womb transforms the foetus into a ‘human’ much before birth (V. 7; 172). “The similitude of Jesus before Allah is as that of Adam …” [V. 3; 59], declaring that Adam (AS) too had a mother, but no father.
