Fifty entrants in The Great Race ready themselves and their vehicles to run the racecourse at speeds exceeding 1,000 kph, each bent on only one thing – reaching the finish line first. This is the way it has been for 500,000 races. This is the way the Civilized Universe maintains its civilization in a conflict-free state: the winner of the race selects the Prime—the titular leader of the CU. Retired consulting engineer, Arthur Robert Lexington, hopes to live his life-long dream of building and racing his modified Porsche 914 in a local car club in Arizona. Armet’Lu, a Human, captains an interstellar freighter delivering cargo under contract. It is a business he has pursued for the last millennium of his 16,400-year life. Between the desert of Arizona and the trackless void of space, Art and Lu meet and clash bitterly. Acrimony and spite underscore the formative moments after they meet, but the four years remaining before the upcoming race allow them time to forge a bond as they struggle to build a fast and powerful vehicle. The greatest race of their lives will be run.

Rocker to Racer is the exciting story of one man's motorcycling career, from a café racer and gang member to a top line competitor, who rubbed shoulders with the world's top riders, including Mike Hailwood, Phil Read and Bill Ivy. Reg Everett was an unknown club racer with just two years experience when he marched into the Greeves factory and asked for works backing. Greeves, then top of the moto cross tree, laughed at him, but Reg managed to persuade them to give him an engine. He bought a frame and built a bike – and it resulted in the birth of the famous Greeves Silverstone. But the Greeves saga was only one of many in his racing career – he also rode BSA, Velocette, Ducati and Yamaha bikes. And it was on the Japanese two-stroke that Reg Everett really set the racing world alight, finishing runner-up in the 250cc British Championships on no less than three occasions, with a string of victories against the likes of Hailwood, Read and Ivy. Besides the British short circuits, Reg also rode in the Isle of Man TT, Thruxton 500 Miller and the legendary Barcelona 24 Hours marathon.

Mods Rockers And The Music Of The British Invasion written by James E. Perone and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-30 with Social Science categories.

Musical floodgates were opened after the Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964. Suddenly, the U.S. record charts, radio, and television were overrun with British rock and pop musicians. Although this British Invasion was the first exposure many Americans had to popular music from the United Kingdom, British pop — and more specifically British rock and roll — had been developing since the middle of the 1950s. Author James Perone here chronicles the development of British rock, from the 1950s imitators of Elvis Presley and other American rockabilly artists, to the new blends of rockabilly, R&B, Motown, and electric blues that defined the British Invasion as we recognize it today. Die-hard fans of the Beatles, the Who, and the Kinks will all want a copy, as will anyone interested in the 1960s more generally. May 1964 saw major gang-style battles break out in British resort communities between the Mods and the Rockers. The tensions between the two groups had been developing for several years, with each group claiming their own sense of culture and style. The Mods wore designer clothing, rode Vespa motor scooters, and shared an affinity for black American soul music, while the Rockers favored powerful motorcycles, greased-back hair, and 1950s American rock and roll. It was within this context that the sounds of the British Invasion developed. Mods, Rockers, and the Music of the British Invasion chronicles the development of British rock through the iconic artists who inspired the movement, as well as through the bands who later found incredible success overseas. In addition to analyzing the music in the context of the British youth culture of the early 1960s, Perone analyzes the reasons that the British bands came to so thoroughly dominate the record charts and airwaves in the United States. The contributions of Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, Tommy Steele, the Tornados, Tony Sheridan, Blues Incorporated, and others to the development of British rock and roll are examined, as are the contributions and commercial and artistic impact of major British Invasion artists such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Dave Clark Five, the Yardbirds, Manfred Mann, the Who, the Kinks, and others. After investigating these groups and their influences upon one another, Perone concludes by examining the commercial and stylistic impact British rock musicians had on the American music of the time.

From 1915 through the early 1920s, American auto racing experienced rapid and exciting change. Competition by European vehicles forced American car manufacturers to incorporate new features, resulting in legendary engineering triumphs (and, essentially, works of art). Some of the greatest drivers in racing history were active during this time--Ralph DePalma, Dario Resta, Eddie Rickenbacker, the Chevrolet brothers, Jimmy Murphy. Presenting dozens of races in detail and a wealth of engineering specs, this history recalls the era's cigar-shaped speedway specials and monumental board tracks, the heavy-footed drivers, fearless mechanics, gifted engineers and enthusiastic backers.

For punk rockers, music and art have often been used as tools for resisting and accommodating the interests of society's dominant classes. During the late 1970s, a predominantly white, male working/middle-class counterculture began to develop what is now known as punk rock. This book shows how punk rock serves to both subvert and accommodate the interest of late-capitalist American society by looking at the trends in the ideas, values, and beliefs transmitted through punk lyrical messages, specifically through the content of three punk record labels and how they have evolved over time. The impact of punk will continue because it is a product of the changing face of alternative cultural spaces - spaces that impact and are impacted by increasingly hostile and exploitive relationships between and within oppressor and oppressed groups.

Music has the universal power to move individuals, peoples and societies. Music is one of the most important signifiers of cultural change. It is also most significant for youth movements and youth cultures. While Islam has a historically and traditionally rich culture of music, religious controversy on the topic of music is still ongoing. However, young Muslims in today's globalised world seek pop cultural tools such as music, and particularly hip hop music, as way of exploring and expressing their manifold identities, whilst challenging Islamophobia, stigma and racism on the one hand and traditional and religious challenges on the other hand. In this volume, following an international conference with the same title, scholars and young academics from a variety of disciplines seek to explore and highlight the phenomena surrounding the two, somewhat artificially separated, realms of music and religion. The contributions not only look into different genres of music, from Tunisian metal over German female hip hop to Egyptian folk, but take the reader on a journey from continent to countries to cities and rural areas and thus give space and time to a widely neglected area of research: that of Muslim popular culture and young Muslims.
