De onderwerpen racisme, extreemrechts geweld, antisemitisme en discriminatie zijn veelbesproken thema's in Nederland. Niet voor niets betreft gelijke behandeling en het gelijkheidsbeginsel Artikel 1 van onze Grondwet. Dit toont hoe belangrijk dit thema voor onze samenleving is. Een terugkerende vraag in de maatschappelijke en politieke discussies is: hoe vaak wordt het discriminatieverbod overtreden? In deze monitor is deze vraag kwantitatief uitgewerkt voor de jaren 2010 en 2011. De inhoud is gebaseerd op een nieuwe manier van gegevensverzameling bij de politie, die vergelijkingen met andere gegevensbronnen mogelijk maakt. Deze rapportage is uitgevoerd in opdracht van de Anne Frank Stichting. Te lezen is hoe vaak de genoemde onderwerpen voorkomen in politieregistraties, met het aantal aangiftes, verdachten en de aard van de incidenten. Ook zijn regionale verschillen in Nederland weergegeven en valt te lezen hoe zaken worden afgehandeld door het Openbaar Ministerie.

This book focuses on the development of bilateral Jewish-Muslim relations in London and Amsterdam since the late-1980s. It offers a comparative analysis that considers both similarities and differences, drawing on historical, social scientific, and religious studies perspectives. The authors address how Jewish-Muslim relations are related to the historical and contemporary context in which they are embedded, the social identity strategies Jews and Muslims and their institutions employ, and their perceived mutual positions in terms of identity and power. The first section reflects on the history and current profile of Jewish and Muslim communities in London and Amsterdam and the development of relations between Jews andMuslims in both cities. The second section engages with sources of conflict and cooperation. Four specific areas that cause tension are explored: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; antisemitism and Islamophobia; attacks by extremists; and the commemoration of wars and genocides. In addition to ‘trigger events’, what stands out is the influence of historical factors, public opinion, the ‘mainstream’ Christian churches and the media, along with the role of government. This book examines the processes for social integration and social cohesion among young people, drawing on data collected from the International Self-Report Delinquency (ISRD) study, which covered 35 studies.This report examines case studies from 5 selected countries (France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States) to provide an in-depth comparative study. Social integration processes are defined by sociologists as the mechanisms through which a society is held together, and populations are transformed into collectivities and communities. They are understood by criminologists to be an important factor in crime prevention, and factors such as peer groups and families are strong determinants of criminal behavior. In a time when society, and particularly young people, can seem increasingly fragmented (due to new technologies, rapidly increasing migration, economic inequality, and increased individuation), the researchers in this volume seek to understand whether and how these phenomena affect young people, and how they may have an impact on the development of criminal and antisocial behavior. This work will provide a framework for researchers in criminology and criminal justice, particularly with an interest in juveniles, developmental criminology, and crime prevention, as well as related fields such as sociology, social work, and demography.

Voor Wegbereiders interviewde Anita van der Hulst meer dan vijftig Roma en Sinti in Nederland en Tsjechië. Zij vertellen openhartig over hun ervaringen, in het leven in het algemeen en in het onderwijs in het bijzonder. Nederland en Tsjechië zijn landen met een sterk verschillende naoorlogse geschiedenis. Een vergelijking tussen die twee landen maakt inzichtelijk welke drempels Roma en Sinti moeten overwinnen om kans te maken op stijging op de sociale ladder.

In 2008 ontstaat discussie over de vraag of de moord op Kerwin Duinmeijer op 20 augustus 1983 wel als racistisch te bestempelen is. Deze discussie wordt aangejaagd door een net verschenen documentaire over de dader. In 1983 bestond nauwelijks discussie over de vraag of hier sprake was geweest van een racistische moord. In april 2008 stelt Rita Verdonk tijdens de startbijeenkomst van haar beweging Trots op Nederland dat Nederlanders het helemaal niet in zich hebben te discrimineren en dus ook niet racistisch gewelddadig te zijn. ‘Wij zijn al eeuwenlang een gastvrij volk’, zo meent zij. Hoe komt het dat 25 jaar na dato het racistische karakter van de moord op Kerwin in twijfel wordt getrokken? En is het inderdaad waar dat discriminatie, laat staan racistisch geweld, geen onderdeel uitmaakt van de Nederlandse historie? In dit boek wordt aangetoond dat dit dominante Nederlandse zelfbeeld niet klopt. Racistisch geweld is een hardnekkig probleem in de hier besproken periode van 1950 tot en met 2009. In reactie op incidenten bestaat echter een grote neiging tot bagatelliseren en om het structurele karakter van dit geweld te ontkennen. En juist die overheidsreactie heeft grote invloed op de wijze waarop dit geweld de kop opsteekt en blijft voortduren. ‘Het boek stemt tot nadenken’, zo stelt Ronald Bandell, in 2009 burgemeester van Dordrecht en voorzitter van het Nederlands Genootschap van Burgemeesters, in zijn voorwoord. Hij spreekt van een conclusie die lang nadreunt en waarvan iedere bestuurder kennis zou moeten nemen.
