No one would doubt the topic of the book 'the trouble with Nigeria' from the revered author and nationalist, Chinua Achebe, the emeritus writer, scholar and author with the undying nationalistic spirit running in his veins till death. How can a nation so much endowed be wallowing in abject poverty when all the resources to make it to compete with the wealthiest nations in the world are abundantly available? The title and the contents of the popular book has produced this thoughtful rejoinder, a research-based book where we went into the political archives of the nation to unveil the major causes of the underdevelopment and the bane towards having the right leaders to manage the abundant natural resources. 'The trouble with Nigeria is the selfishness of the political elites that operated and still operating under ethno-religion divides of the masses to feather their own nests' as author Amusa Abdulateef wrote. In short, this author wrote the book to act as rejoinder of the popular book 'the trouble with Nigeria'. The point that served as the bane of national economic and political growth that are negatively affecting the other areas is no doubt the dearth of leadership at different time in the history of the nation. It is either the leaders are not emerged from the right political ideology that suit the environment or the leaders are not the right people for the job. The nation has been ruled by the military with dictatorial laws, the parliamentary and presidential system of governance with flaws. This author's researches also critically looked into the stakeholders and the primary and other roles of each in the national growth in all ramifications. Author Amusa Abdulateef wrote huge on the constitutional rights of the eligible voters on the election and recall of the elected leaders, the duties of the electoral body and the other stakeholders in the electioneering. All these are targeted at having the right leaders for the tiers of government for the positive impacts on the nation and the nationals. To the author, there is need for reforms in voting, active participation of voters' assembly, electoral laws and the terms as tenure in offices then the nation is off the wood. Through the emergence of the right crops of leaders and necessary reforms, the trending restructuring by the people shall go down and the trouble with Nigeria shall end within a short time. The book is a prized asset to the students of history and socio-economic, political analysts and philosophers. It is a must for all libraries as a good reference in administrative books.

In this book, the tripod of the same title from the author Amusa Abdulateef, we critically looked into the roles of the tripods of democracy and the media and the impacts on the populace. The general opinion depicts that leadership issue in the nation does not reside at a particular door or a social burden of a particular section of the populace except the 'purely unlettered and moron with mental disorder' to an extent, we are all responsible from the age of major. The not-too-young-bill recently assented to become an Act is challenged by the age of major at eighteen. In retrospect, towards solving the issue of poor and rudderless leaders, we must join brains to have the end to all calamities befallen the nation as patriotic citizens starting from the media that drives the public into action especially on those to elect into public offices as the executives and the legislators at all the three tiers of government. Therefore, there should be continuous research on how the leadership crises are permanently resolved by the collaboration of the public and the media. The first two volumes have treated different issues. In this volume, we are looking at the emergence of the tripods with the functions of national interest of the media particularly the professional and certified media practitioners. By these, the lasting solutions to end the paucity of right crops of leaders become a thing of the past. According to the author on the basis of his analytical researches, in order to have true leaders, we must end the epidemic rot called corruption at all levels of governance by the enactment and enforcement of punitive measures of national interest and values; in addition, right bills must be sponsored and the existing Acts require amendment. The author, Amusa Abdulateef is of the opinion that all the problems are solvable with the collaboration efforts of the three arms of government in a democracy and these should have support of the unofficial fourth arm called the media that must act the media partner and a bridge between the government and the people including institutions. Finally, the trouble shooting author identified the functions of those who should sponsor bills for the legislation at the tiers of government written in a very lucid language for the general public.

Author Amusa Abdulateef did not rest in further research into the troubles with Nigeria after the first publication by releasing the foundation for the re-building of the nation. Many patriotic professional experts proffered different solutions at different times to lift the nation out of the woods. Several administrations have adopted many of the solutions and still failed. Are we saying that the economic advisers and consultants to the government are failing? Are we saying that the National Economic Intelligence Committee headed by the Vice President is not effective? Why is the nation still finding self in the mess since independence despite all the abundant resources in human and mineral deposits plus climes? 'Saboteurs within and outside are not free from the complex situation the nation finds itself. The users of hate messages and speeches are adding fuels to the fire' stressed the author Amusa Abdulateef. Acts of national assembly that established FEDERAL CHARACTER and some other commissions and institutions are the bane to the underdevelopment of the nation. 'Through evaluating by federal character, the quality materials are never recognized. It is easy for the dupers to shortchange the nation. By this, a position for a particular professional graduates could be occupied by others at the instance of federal character. In addition, the adoption of the federal character paves the way for nepotism. Many competent nationals in the diaspora fail to show up as a result of the federal character in the sharing of position and not by competence' the author wrote. Failure to have the round pegs on the round hole is the bane to growth and development. Verbatim he wrote 'For instance, if all are able to apply for certain jobs with criteria of selection are unambiguously stated and open to all with no favour to any religion, region, race, association and the likes already mentioned in the course of writing, then the competition would be strong. Those who are not eventually successful shall neither blame the recruiters nor angry with the system or institution. The transfer of aggression for the losers of the positions to the federal character usually adds to the insecurity situation and threats of the nation'. The primary solution is the total recognition for the national insignias and this shall serve as the foundation for the other proffered solutions to end the troubles and turn the troubles with Nigeria to the blessings with Nigerians. 'To pull out the cancerous items in the constitution and prevent the debating laws against independent institutions, the legislative powers should be limited to oversight functions, checking the excess, incompetence of government MDAs and security agencies, questioning the defaulting agencies and the working on budgets and passing new laws on new issues that are yet to be identified by the constitution', he wrote. In short, the work has the FOUR explicit solutions namely the right use of the messages of the national insignias, the use of census, the revisiting and re-scripting of the national constitution and the social restructuring to permanently end the trouble with the Nigeria as an addition to the voters' inputs and other references from the first volume. How can the four become realities? The book expressly illustrates these in simple language! The book is for general readers. The use of the inspired proffered solutions shall be appreciated by the author as shown in his word 'my dream is to have a nation Nigeria that would truly live the name, giant of Africa'.

Beautifully written yet highly controversial, An Image of Africa asserts Achebe's belief in Joseph Conrad as a 'bloody racist' and his conviction that Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness only serves to perpetuate damaging stereotypes of black people. Also included is The Trouble with Nigeria, Achebe's searing outpouring of his frustrations with his country. GREAT IDEAS. Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are.

The Trouble with America critiques the theory and practice of American government, focusing on the fatal flaws of America's core political arrangements. Institutionalized pluralism, the structural dispersal of power, generates government too weak to solve our public problems. American constitutionalism, the limitation of government power and authority, protects property rights far better than it defends our civil liberties, and it offers little or no protection for non-citizens. Capitalism is a hyper-competitive and grossly unfair economic system, which rewards pre-existing wealth far better than hard work or talent, and encourages petty materialist consumption of mostly low-quality goods, undermining taste as well as fairness. Taken together, pluralism, constitutionalism, and capitalism in America harm our society in a myriad of ways, leaving us with inadequate representation, poor leadership, social and political paralysis and irresponsibility, unrealistic self-images, and scandalously poor domestic and foreign policies. This book will prove a valuable supplement in American government courses, an alternative to the centrist material currently dominating textbooks on this subject.

Nigeria, the United States’ most important strategic partner in West Africa, is in grave trouble. While Nigerians often claim they are masters of dancing on the brink without falling off, the disastrous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, the radical Islamic insurrection Boko Haram, and escalating violence in the delta and the north may finally provide the impetus that pushes it into the abyss of state failure. In this thoroughly updated edition, John Campbellexplores Nigeria’s post-colonial history and presents a nuanced explanation of the events and conditions that have carried this complex, dynamic, and very troubled giant to the edge. Central to his analysis are the oil wealth, endemic corruption, and elite competition that have undermined Nigeria’s nascent democratic institutions and alienated an increasingly impoverished population. However, state failure is not inevitable, nor is it in the interest of the United States. Campbell provides concrete new policy options that would not only allow the United States to help Nigeria avoid state failure but also to play a positive role in Nigeria’s political, social, and economic development.

The Latin adage “Si vis pacem, para bellum” (if you want peace, prepare for war) is usually interpreted as ‘peace through strength.’ It expresses the idea that being armed and ready to fight in order to defend oneself is a viable way of keeping the peace. However, the truism of the adage is expressed by the author who argues for peace and sustainable development of Africa at large in the light of the Nigerian/Biafra struggle. He intellectually equips readers with memories of the past lest the mistakes of history be repeated. The author uses the power of the pen as a weapon mightier than the sword, to discuss the structures of peace in the African context. He weighs in a balance, the need for restructuring and the right for self-determination; the way to freedom and collective effort towards development. This volume contains articles that propose potential and functional solutions to the perennial challenges presently facing Nigeria as a country. Interestingly, the reflections recommend steps towards cordial reconciliation and the liberating spirit that would catalyze the restoration of an emerging nation (the Republic of Biafra). The volume further expands the ongoing ideas and thoughts on a variety of issues that offer roadmaps to the contextual problems of the indigenous people as well as the Christian Mission and evangelical witness. Furthermore, the author goes on to demonstrate that when dialogue is employed, peace makes its way in the hearts of the citizens, which ushers in the flourishing of good governance and economic growth. Hence, justice, equity, peace, equal rights and opportunity become the bedrock upon which every nation-state is supposed to be founded.
