Excerpt from Teaching Reading in Ten Cities Perhaps no plan for helping teachers through an educational journal has ever been a greater success than the series of "Teaching Reading in Ten Cities," which appeared last year in Primary Education. Everybody who is responsible for the teaching of little children is keenly interested in the problem of teaching them to read. The ways are numerous. The results record every shade of satisfaction and dissatisfaction known to teachers. Rumors of what was being done in this branch of instruction in other schools reached the teachers; but they could not go and see for themselves. Excerpt from School Reading by Grades: Second Year Tm; chief purpose of this volume, as of the others in the series, is to help the pupil learn to read; and to this object everything else is sub servient. Bearing in mind the fact that only those children who like to read ever become good readers, the author has endeavored so to construct and arrange the several lessons as to make each reading exercise a source of pleasure to all. The successive stories, poems, and other pieces have been chosen so as to present a varied succession of thoughts and images pleasing to the child - thus stimulating his interest from day to day, arousing his curiosity, directing his imagination, and adding to his store of knowledge. The gradation is as nearly perfect as possible, each lesson being but a little more difficult than that which precedes it. All new words that would be likely to offer the slightest difficulties to the learner are printed in the word lists at the beginning of the selection. Since each recitation must necessarily be short, all the longer pieces have been divided into parts - each part being sufficient in most cases for one lesson. This method obviates the objection usually made to long selections in books of this grede, and makes it possible to present in complete form several adaptations of productions that are by common consent recognized as classical. The constant trend of the lessons in all the volumes in this series is towards leading the learner, as soon as he is prepared for it, to a knowledge and appreciation of the best things in the permanent literature of the world. Excerpt from Classroom Libraries for Public Schools The first purpose of this graded list is to furnish to teachers a convenient cata logue Of the books which the Public Library has to this date devoted to school use. We hope, by having such a list, to secure the aid of the teachers in the choice of each classroom library, so that the books may be suited to the age and capacity of the Children, and helpful both to teachers and pupils in connection with the course of study. The list is only tentative, and other books will be added from time to time, both from old books found to be needed and from new books published, as the wants of the schools require and the resources of the library will permit. The library will be very glad of suggestions from teachers, both as to changes in the list and the addi tion of new books. The selection of the books and the division into grades was first made on the basis of the reading from the Children's Department of the Public Library. The first selec tion and division was very carefully revised after trying the books in the classrooms of ten schools for a full year. The assignment of the books to the different grades has been changed and modified, particularly in the subjects of travel and history, to meet the requirements of the course of study. For instance, Cofiin's books on United States history have been continued into the ninth grade, although they are not above the comprehension of much younger readers, because American history is studied in this grade, and these books are found very useful and are much sought after. Librarians, superintendents of education and teachers in other cities, to whom the list may come, will find it Open to criticism, both as to books omitted, books included which perhaps should have been left out, and as to the assignment to grades. After a longer trial of the books by further use, and a larger experience by the com pilers, we will try to issue a better and fuller list with subject entries. The suggested list of reference books is also only tentative. It is added because it is a part of our plan to build up a good reference library in each school. The entire amount of the state appropriation awarded to those schools under the library care will be expended for this purpose each year, the Public Library furnishing all the books for the pupils' home reading.
