The conscious, unconscious and subconscious parts of the mind are commonly used to store information and are known to everyone these days. But then, what about the "Mushin?" The "no mind?" In Japanese, the "Mushin" is a mental state into which trained martial artists are said to enter during combat. But, if anybody locked up their memories, experiences and dreams in there, then wouldn't it be a kind of fun to read that person's "Mushin" by chance? It would be like getting a password to somebody's locker! Don't miss the chance!

The Philosophy Of No Mind written by Nishihira Tadashi and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-18 with Philosophy categories.

Nishihira Tadashi, one of Japan's leading philosophers, introduces the deeply experiential philosophy of no-mind (mushin). In everyday Japanese, mushin is when one loses oneself in the reality of the present and becomes one with it, resulting in one's best performance. However, behind this everyday use is a concept that touches the core of Japanese spirituality. This book explores no-mind in its dynamic complexity. It is both the letting go of the calculations of mind and at the same time the arising of a vibrant consciousness in unity with reality. This gives rise to various tensions: Is it about negating or affirming self? Is stillness or activity? How does it relate with social ethics, or religious transcendence? And what is stopping no-mind from descending into mere mindlessness? These tensional facets are explored through philosophy and history of thought in Japan, from pre-Buddhist Japanese thought, to Zen Buddhism in D.T. Suzuki and Toshihiko Izutsu, to swordsmanship and Noh theater. These historical approaches are brought to the here-and-now, dialoguing with psychology, ethics, and the experiences of everyday life, and ending with two preliminary practical explorations-What does it mean to care for another and to educate from the point of view of no-mind?

Holy Faces written by Julie K. Aageson and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-05 with Religion categories.

This eclectic, perhaps quirky collection of reflections celebrates a longing to know who we are, who and what God is, and what the world is like. In joy and sorrow, each one mirrors the holiness of life, eliciting reverence--for ourselves, the natural world, and the mystery of what it means to be. Each conveys a sense of awe and wonder while pointing beyond mere observation, a deeper and more profound encounter than may first meet the eye. The faces of poets Mary Oliver and Brian Doyle help illumine the natural world. The faces of prophets Brian Blount, Desmond Tutu, and John Lewis inspire engagement and action. Julian of Norwich continues to astound and astonish with her discerning writings and visions. And the Buddha, in his last hours, admonishes frightened villagers to "make of yourselves a light." Readers will be reminded of faces from the recent pandemic and the grief of suicide together with the joy of new life. In faces known and unknown, this book honors holy faces that grace our lives. These are faces where I see God.

What The Ancestors Knew written by Joanne P. Miller and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-30 with Religion categories.

This book is intended to engender debate. Its subject, faith in a modern Buddhist context, almost always carries with it the widespread but erroneous assumption that it is completely unimportant to the Buddhist path. Without really knowing what it is and how it differs from theistic versions, faith has been given a bad name. Moreover, naivety regarding the colonial orientalist agenda and bias of early Zen exegetes in the West has allowed modern Zennists to accept, almost unquestioningly, the view that faith and knowledge occupy opposite ends of the practice spectrum. As a result, trusted and authentic sources of authority, Zen ancestors and sutras, have often been prevented from speaking about a doctrinally sound and legitimate tool of realization mentioned in a stunningly large amount of sutras. It has also resulted in an erroneous and often condescending view of “faith schools” of Buddhism. Now is the perfect time in Zen’s journey in the West to reassess and address these shortcomings.

This edited collection addresses the link between second language pragmatics (including interlanguage and intercultural) research and English language education. The chapters use different contemporary research methods and theoretical frameworks such as conversation analysis, language-learners-as-ethnographers, discourse and interactional approaches and data in contexts (either in the region or overseas). The content explores and discusses the significance of learning and teaching of second language (L2) pragmatics in language education for learners who use English as a lingua franca for academic and intercultural communication purposes with native and non-native speakers of English, focusing on pragmatic actions, social behaviours, perceptions and awareness levels in three regions in East Asia – China, Japan and South Korea. It is an important contribution to the area of second language pragmatics in language education for East Asian learners. It recommends research-informed pedagogies for the learning and teaching of interlanguage or intercultural pragmatics in regions and places where similar cultural beliefs or practices are found. This is an essential read for researchers, language educators, classroom teachers, readers who are interested in second language pragmatics research and those interested in second language acquisition and English language education in the East Asian context.

Mushin written by Ernst Arnold and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-28 with categories.

The highest level of consciousness in martial arts is mushin, or "no mind," a state that provided the samurai with no fear of death. To achieve this state is considered the summit of martial arts and Zen practice. But how do you get there? Traditionally the answer has been to train again and again. With twenty years of experience and a black belt in Seiyo No Shorin-Ryu karate, Dr. Ernst Arnold does not dispute the vital importance of training. Instead he combines traditional thought with modern scientific knowledge to help students understand and reach mushin. After providing basic principles of Zen thought, Dr. Arnold dissects the teachings of four of the most respected masters of traditional martial arts: Miyamoto Musashi, Gichin Funakoshi, Masutatsu Oyama, and Bruce Lee. From there he moves into the modern scientific world, explaining what the masters intuitively understood and adding practical strategies of his own. Mushin offers new ways to see and train while upholding traditional approaches. By combining the old with the new, he hopes to point the way to readers to make the leap from martial artisans to true artistry.
