Reading Success in the Early Primary Years is a step-by-step guide to structured literacy instruction for teachers working in the early years of primary school. Written by a teacher, for teachers, this book supports teachers to understand the evidence base of reading instruction and how to successfully implement it. Structured in three parts, the book breaks down complex concepts in a concise, accessible manner, guiding teachers on eight key actions to take to get every child on the path to reading proficiency. These include instruction in phonics, phonological and phonemic awareness, integrated reading and spelling opportunities, and the use of decodable texts. Highly practical, Reading Success in the Early Primary Years offers over 20 explicit instructional routines that teachers can implement in their classrooms and guidance on how to get the most out of instructional time. These practical elements are further supported by a summary of relevant research and theories about how reading develops, including an outline of high impact, explicit teaching that draws on cognitive load theory. Rich with sample lesson plans, tools, and examples from real classrooms, this book allows teachers to get on with the business of teaching reading. This is a must-have resource for all who are responsible for children’s reading instruction in the first three years of school.

What does research say about teaching each component of readingâe"vocabulary, alphabetics, fluency, comprehension, spelling, and writing? Why is Response to Intervention so important, and how can I put it to work? How can I get students engaged and motivated to read? What are the best classroom assessment methods? What does good professional development look like? Answers to these critical questions come complete with simple, straightforward explanations of research and brief, applicable vignettes that demonstrate how to work research-based practices into classroom reading instruction. Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Phonics for Pupils with Special Educational Needs is a complete, structured, multisensory programme for teaching reading and spelling, making it fun and accessible for all. This fantastic seven-part resource offers a refreshingly simple approach to the teaching of phonics, alongside activities to develop auditory and visual perceptual skills. Specifically designed to meet the needs of pupils of any age with special educational needs, the books break down phonics into manageable core elements and provide a huge wealth of resources to support teachers in teaching reading and spelling. Book 1: Building Basics introduces basic sounds and explores their relationship with letters. It focuses on sounds and letters where there is a simple 1:1 correspondence between the two, and explores the sounds in simple words that follow the pattern of vowel-consonant or consonant-vowel-consonant. Sounds are grouped into seven sets, with each set containing more than 50 engaging activities, including: sound story, dynamic blending, reading race, spot the word and spelling challenge. Thorough guidance is provided on how to deliver each activity, as well as a lesson planner template, handy word lists and posters for teachers and teaching assistants to use to support learning. Each book in the series gradually builds on children’s understanding of sounds and letters and provides scaffolded support for children to learn about every sound in the English language. Offering tried and tested material which can be photocopied for each use, this is an invaluable resource to simplify phonics teaching for teachers and teaching assistants and provide fun new ways of learning phonics for all children. This book is accompanied by a companion resource, 'Phonics for Pupils with Complex SEND ', to be used alongside the Phonics for Pupils with Special Educational Needs programme. The activities from Books 1-6 of the programme are adapted to be accessible for non-verbal pupils, including AAC users, and those with physical disabilities.
