Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Eighteenth Century The principles governing the choice of selections may be briefly explained. In the first place, it was thought well to re present the half-dozen (more or less) most important prose writers of the century by fairly generous and complete speci mens of their work, approximating some twenty to thirty thou sand words each. These selections cover, in the experience of the editor, the assignments of prescribed reading set for one or two weeks, in college courses dealing with the century as a whole. The authors thus largely represented are Defoe, Swift, Steele, Addison, Johnson, Boswell, and Burke. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Nineteenth Century The form of the text has been generally normalized to mod ern usage, in respect to spelling, punctuation, and the like, except where individual practice is of real significance as in the capitalization of some of the writings of Carlyle As in the earlier volume, the editor's notes are restricted to two classes: facts which the reader should have in mind in begin ning a selection, and interpretations necessary to the fairly rapid reading of the text. Excerpt from English Literature in the Eighteenth Century This volume contains the substance of a course of lectures delivered in Cambridge, and repeated in part in Philadelphia, during the winter of 1881-82. This statement will, it is hoped, incline the reader to overlook the direct appeals to his memory and attention, which may be permissible to one reading aloud to a friendly audience, although less pardonable in the formality of print. In preparing this book for the press I have endeavored to make the references to the works of other writers as full and as exact as possible, but I would once more explicitly acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. J. A. Symonds, whose volumes on Italian literature have been of constant service; to Mr. Leslie Stephen, whose "History of English Thought in the Eighteenth Century" is a thorough exposition of many subjects barely mentioned by me; to Mr. Karl Hillebrand's profound "German Thought," and to Mr. Alexandre Beljame's "Le Public et les Hommes de Lettres." This last-mentioned book I have made use of continually, especially in the pages on the periodicals that preceded the Tatler, on Pope, and on Addison. Excerpt from An Anthology of English Prose: From Bede to R. L. Stevenson The trend of English prose, always more elusive than that of poetry, and its gradual development from infancy to gigantic growth, afford a voyage of adventure for him who seeks. The temper of the English mind, the growth of its national sensibility, have found an idealized expression in the pages of poetry, but in the realms of prose have been re ected in all their many moods and changes with kaleidoscopic vigour and detail. It was characteristic of English prose during its earliest period that it should have little universal interest; until the eighteenth century it was the instrument for the individual expression of enthusiasm for a particular religious belief, or a favourite line of thought. What there was of general interest to mankind came into England in the form of translations - most in uential of all, the Authorized Version of the Bible in 1611. The writers of English prose ploughed small and isolated plots, while poetry early swept over its head and rained benefits upon rich and poor, learned and lewd. Yet the national energy from earliest times has found its expression, eeting though that was at first, in prose, as well as in poetry; and as the Saxon element absorbed the Norman and all other in uxes of alien growth, so English prose has enriched itself from many foreign sources and yet remains thoroughly English. Excerpt from English Poets of the Eighteenth Century: Selected and Edited With an Introduction Students of poetical history will find it illuminating to read the passages in chronological order (irrespective of authorship); and in order to facilitate this method I have given in the table of contents the date of each poem. Excerpt from English Prose From Bacon to Hardy The selections in this book have been chosen with two purposes - firstly, to give ample representation to each author included, and, secondly, to limit the number of authors so that the book may not be too bulky to serve as a text-book in courses on the history of English literature. Owing to the inclusion of minor writers, many volumes of selections present the student with too large and complex a mass of material. Other books, confining themselves to one type of prose such as the essay, are too narrow in their scope for use in courses on literary history. The plan adopted here has necessitated the omission of many authors. For example, Burton, De Quincey, Landor, Newman, Pater, and others have not been given because, by reason of style or subject, they can hardly be considered as representative figures. Other writers, such as Fuller, Sir William Temple, and Leigh Hunt, have been omitted because their main characteristics are sufficiently represented in one of their greater contemporaries. The novelists have been represented by adequate selections from those writers only who arc most important in the tradition and development of the novel. Boswell's Life of Johnson has been passed over because the book, effective by its mass, can hardly have justice done it by an extract.
