Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Nineteenth Century The form of the text has been generally normalized to mod ern usage, in respect to spelling, punctuation, and the like, except where individual practice is of real significance as in the capitalization of some of the writings of Carlyle As in the earlier volume, the editor's notes are restricted to two classes: facts which the reader should have in mind in begin ning a selection, and interpretations necessary to the fairly rapid reading of the text. Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Eighteenth Century The principles governing the choice of selections may be briefly explained. In the first place, it was thought well to re present the half-dozen (more or less) most important prose writers of the century by fairly generous and complete speci mens of their work, approximating some twenty to thirty thou sand words each. These selections cover, in the experience of the editor, the assignments of prescribed reading set for one or two weeks, in college courses dealing with the century as a whole. The authors thus largely represented are Defoe, Swift, Steele, Addison, Johnson, Boswell, and Burke. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ... CHARLES LAMB ON THE TRAGEDIES OF SHAKESPEARE CONSIDERED WITH REFERENCE TO THEIR FITNESS FOR STAGE REPRESENTATION 1812 This early example of Lamb's dramatic criticism appeared in No. 4 of Leigh Hunt's journal The Reflector. The paper opens with a criticism of the tomb of Garrick in Westminster Abbey, and a denial of the right of the actor to a position of honour comparable to that of the dramatist.... It may seem a paradox, but I cannot help being of the opinion that the plays of Shakespeare are less calculated for performance on a stage than those of almost any other dramatist whatever. Their distinguishing excellence is a reason that they should be so; there is so much in them which comes not under the province of acting, with which eye and tone and gesture have nothing to do. The glory of the scenic art is to personate passion, and the turns of passion; and the more coarse and palpable the passion is, the more hold upon the eyes and ears of the spectators the performer obviously possesses. For this reason scolding scenes, scenes where two persons talk themselves into a fit of fury, and then in a surprising manner talk themselves out of it again, have always been the most popular upon our stage. And the reason is plain, --because the spectators are here most palpably appealed to; they are the proper judges in this war of words, they are the legitimate ring that should be formed round such "intellectual prize-fighters." Talking is the direct object of the imitation here. But in all the best dramas, and in Shakespeare above all, how obvious it is that the form of speaking, whether it be in soliloquy or dialogue, is only a medium--and often a highly artificial one--for putting the reader or spectator into possession of that knowledge of the inner structure a...

Excerpt from English Literature of the Nineteenth Century: On the Plan of the Author's "Compendium of English Literature," and Supplementary to It; Designed for Colleges and Advanced Classes in Schools, as Well as for Private Reading Before I began to collect my materials for the Compendium of English Literature, I felt that I could do no sort of justice to the subject should I come down later than 1800; and it was therefore my original intention to publish a similar work, em bracing the most prominent authors, dead and living, who have flourished since the beginning of the present century. Such is the present work. I have therefore but few prefatory remarks to make respecting it 3 for as it is upon the same plan as the Compendium, I would refer to the preface of that, for my object and design in preparing both. Excerpt from English Literature of the Nineteenth Century: On the Plan of the Author's "Compendium of English Literature," and Supplementary to It The second marked change in my book results, of course, from the necessity of keeping abreast with the intellectual progress of the age, - the busiest-brained generation the world has ever known. During the last fourteen years, a large number of authors have emerged, from greater or less obscurity of reputa tion, into assured prominence in their several departments of literature; and one of my most delicate tasks has been to set forth in these pages a just record of such developments; and no effort has been spared to determine fairly, as far as I could, the comparative attitude, as well as the absolute literary status, of every prominent writer. That this has been, all along, a work of great and constant difficulty and embarrassment, I need hardly say; that I shall secure a unanimous verdict in favor of my suc cess upon this point, it would be idle to hope; but of this I 'feel sure, that the most lenient criticism will be extended to me from those who have most widely viewed and critically examined this illimitable field. There is one new feature of the present edition which, I am confident, will be universally acceptable, - the Supplementary Lists of secondary authors, alphabetically arranged and ap pended to each decade, with short notices of their chief works. They are classed as secondary only in a comparative sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Travel narratives and historical works shaped the perception of Muslims and the East in the Victorian and post-Victorian periods. Analyzing the discourses on Muslims which originated in the European Middle Ages, the first part of the book discusses the troubled legacy of the encounters between the East and the West and locates the nineteenth-century texts concerning the Saracens and their lands in the liminal space between history and fiction. Drawing on the nineteenth-century models, the second part of the book looks at fictional and non-fictional works of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century which re-established the "Oriental obsession," stimulating dread and resentment, and even more strongly setting the Civilized West against the Barbaric East. Here medieval metaphorical enemies of Mankind – the World, the Flesh and the Devil – reappear in different contexts: the world of immigration, of white women desiring Muslim men, and the present-day "freedom fighters."
