Handbook of Reagents for Organic Synthesis Reagents, Auxiliaries and Catalysts for C-C Bond Formation Robert M. Coates and Scott E. Denmark The University of Illinois, Urbana, USA Recognising the critical need for bringing a handy reference work that deals with the most popular reagents in synthesis to the laboratory of practising organic chemists, the Editors, of the acclaimed Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis (EROS) have selected the most important and useful reagents employed in contemporary organic synthesis. The Handbook of Reagents for Organic Synthesis; Reagents Auxiliaries and Catalysts for C-C Bond Formation, provides practical and concise information on a diverse group of reagents. To familiarise the user with the spectrum of reagents contained within this volume, the editors have subdivided more than 200 entries into 22 classes based on their chemical structures and function. The articles, arranged alphabetically, contain all of the information found in EROS as well as expanded reagents listings. In addition, new listings of recently published review articles and monographs are included, as well as relevant Organic Syntheses procedures that deal with either the preparations or reactions of the featured reagents. This comprehensive and well referenced handbook will prove of great value to all practitioners in the field of organic chemistry.

In 1912, the Chemistry Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery of the so-called Grignard reagents. Nowadays, many transition metal variants are developed to modify reactivity and selectivity of the C–C bond formation reaction. The Grignard reaction is one of the fundamental organometallic reactions, often used in alcohol syntheses. With transition metals like iron, cobalt and nickel or with noble metals like copper, silver and palladium, modern Grignard reagents can be designed in reactivity, selectivity and functional group tolerance. This book, written by international experts, presents an overview on timely Grignard chemistry involving transition metals.

Organozinc reagents are less reactive than Grignard reagents but they are much more chemoselective. Since the Negishi cross-coupling reaction developed by Ei-ichi Negishi, who was awarded the Nobel Price in chemistry in 2010, a number of cross-coupling reactions involving organozinc derivatives and transition metal catalysts (Pd, Ni, Fe, Co, Cu, ...) has been tuned up to form C-C bonds. This book on "Organozinc derivatives and transition metal catalysts" has been written by experts in the field and is a complement to the book entitled "Grignard reagents and transition metal catalysts" (a De Gruyter book, edited by J. Cossy). Grignard reagents or organozinc reagents, that is the question? From a given substrate, what is the best organometallic reagent and the best transition metal to form a C-C bond by using a cross-coupling reaction? The solution might be found in these two books.

Derived from the renowned, Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis (EROS), the related editors have created a new handbook which focuses on chiral reagents used in asymmetric synthesis and is designed for the chemist at the bench. This new handbook follows the same format as the Encyclopedia, including an introduction and an alphabetical arrangement of the reagents. As chiral reagents are the key for the successful asymmetric synthesis, choosing the right reagents is essential, in this handy reference the editors give details on how to prepare, store and use the reagents as well as providing key reactions to demonstrate where reagents have been successfully used. Comprehensive information on 226 reagents Covers 64 reagents which were not included in EROS All information in one easy to use volume – at an affordable price All reagents included will be added to e-EROS – please visit the site where you can gain access to over 50,000 reactions and 3,800 of the most frequently consulted reagents. In 1972, a very powerful catalytic cycle for carbon-carbon bond formation was 2 first discovered by the coupling reaction of Grignard reagents at the sp -carbon. Over the past 30 years, the protocol has been substantially improved and expanded to other coupling reactions of Li,B,N,O,Al,Si,P,S,Cu,Mn,Zn,In,Sn, and Hg compounds. These reactions provided an indispensable and simple methodology for preparative organic chemists. Due to the simplicity and rel- bility in the carbon-carbon, carbon-heteroatom, and carbon-metalloid bo- formations,as well as high efficiency of the catalytic process, the reactions have been widely employed by organic chemists in various fields. Application of the protocol ranges from various syntheses of complex natural products to the preparation of biologically relevant molecules including drugs, and of sup- molecules, and to functional materials. The reactions on solid surfaces allow robot synthesis and combinatorial synthesis. Now, many organic chemists do not hesitate to use transition metal complexes for the transformation of org- ic molecules. Indeed, innumerable organic syntheses have been realized by the catalyzed reactions of transition metal complexes that are not achievable by t- ditional synthetic methods. Among these, the metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions have undoubtedly contributed greatly to the development of such a new area of “metal-catalyzed organic syntheses”. An excellent monograph for the cross-coupling reactions and other met- catalyzed C-C bond-forming reactions recently appeared in Metal-catalyzed Cross-coupling Reactions (Wiley-VCH,1998).
