Real Democracy written by Frank M. Bryan and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-15 with Political Science categories.

Relying on an astounding collection of more than three decades of firsthand research, Frank M. Bryan examines one of the purest forms of American democracy, the New England town meeting. At these meetings, usually held once a year, all eligible citizens of the town may become legislators; they meet in face-to-face assemblies, debate the issues on the agenda, and vote on them. And although these meetings are natural laboratories for democracy, very few scholars have systematically investigated them. A nationally recognized expert on this topic, Bryan has now done just that. Studying 1,500 town meetings in his home state of Vermont, he and his students recorded a staggering amount of data about them—238,603 acts of participation by 63,140 citizens in 210 different towns. Drawing on this evidence as well as on evocative "witness" accounts—from casual observers to no lesser a light than Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn—Bryan paints a vivid picture of how real democracy works. Among the many fascinating questions he explores: why attendance varies sharply with town size, how citizens resolve conflicts in open forums, and how men and women behave differently in town meetings. In the end, Bryan interprets this brand of local government to find evidence for its considerable staying power as the most authentic and meaningful form of direct democracy. Giving us a rare glimpse into how democracy works in the real world, Bryan presents here an unorthodox and definitive book on this most cherished of American institutions.

The liberal representative model of democracy is in a crisis. In protest camps, neighbourhood assemblies and through other non-hierarchical initiatives, the Occupy movement as well as other recent anti-austerity movements are redefining democracy as a positive way to engage with this crisis. The more direct democratic models of organisation that they are employing are not aimed at making the politicians regain their lost public legitimacy. Instead, direct democracy is perceived by these movements as a radical alternative to the established forms of representation. Can direct democracy become an actual alternative to representative democracy? This book takes an engaged and in-depth look at the Occupy movement in Ireland and the San Francisco Bay Area in the US in order to present the most up-to-date evidence of the changing nature of popular democratic demands. It takes an insider’s perspective to analyse the internal processes and iterations of the movement. Establishing links between social movements and transformations of democracy, as well as underscoring the significance of the recent movements for the future of democracy, this book is essential reading for students, scholars and activists interested in direct democracy, social movements, and radical politics more generally.

Our politics is broken, but it can be fixed. A real democracy is not only possible — it is an urgent necessity. Provocative, succinct and inspiring, The End of Politicians combines insights from the history of democracy with a critical understanding of the information revolution to explain how we can fix democracy by eliminating politicians and replacing them with a representative network of everyday citizens. A wealth of recent evidence has shown that groups of randomly selected, ordinary people can and do make balanced, informed and trusted decisions. These citizens' assemblies are legitimate, accountable, competent and, above all, convincing demonstrations that we can govern ourselves. The future of democracy has arrived. It is time for the end of politicians.

Excerpt from What Is Real Democracy? Answered by an Exposition of the Constitution of the United States A term only belonging, in fact, to the realm of natural history, and the world of elements, has become current among historians and politicians, although by them analogously applied, - we mean the expression 'organic development.' It is most often made use of by those teachers of statesmanship who have need of some palliating or imposing phrase by which to defend or support that which exists, particularly that among existing things 'which deserves to be destroyed.' But even liberal politicians still seriously engage in discussion of the question whether States, like plants, develop 'organically', that is to say, by means of an unconscious, limited growth, determined by the first germ, or whether, in their origin and development, they are and should be the mutable work of the thinking and directing mind of man: in other words, the question would be - Is man an unconscious production of nature, like the plant? or is he a self-conscious, self-determining, thinking being? Do you trust the government? Do you feel represented by the politicians inside the government? Do you trust politicians? Do you vote for "the lesser of two evils"?The truth is you do not live in a real democracy. Electoral Representative Democracy is not a truly democratic system, it is oppressive, it concentrates power in a few hands, it is inefficient, polarizing, easily corrupted and it tends to generate either stagnation or dictators. What options do we have?Stay on this oppressive, polarizing, and inefficient system until it breaks apart or a dictator or violent revolution terrorizes our society.Implement a more oppressive and totalitarian system to maintain "order" and ramp up "efficiency". Implement one of the truly democratic but inefficient systems that have already been developed and applied like direct democracy or sortition democracy.Develop new, efficient, just, and real democratic systems and processes like the Democratic Objectivecracy. What is our best option? The Democratic Objectivecracy: a new social organization system that is truly democratic, participatory, efficient, hard to corrupt, that distributes power equally among all citizens, it incentivizes collaboration and cooperation to achieve societies common objectives, it protects citizens from oppression and abuses of power and it generates new opportunities and freedoms. The Democratic Objectivecracy maximizes organization and citizens' power while eliminating hierarchy and the concentration of power in a few hands. Can we really change the system?Of course! Systems have been changed before and they will continue to change. The real question is not whether or not the system will change but whether it will change peacefully or through violence and whether it will change to be more oppressive or a more just and free system.Do you want real democracy?Do you trust the government?
