Excerpt from What Is Real Democracy? Answered by an Exposition of the Constitution of the United States A term only belonging, in fact, to the realm of natural history, and the world of elements, has become current among historians and politicians, although by them analogously applied, - we mean the expression 'organic development.' It is most often made use of by those teachers of statesmanship who have need of some palliating or imposing phrase by which to defend or support that which exists, particularly that among existing things 'which deserves to be destroyed.' But even liberal politicians still seriously engage in discussion of the question whether States, like plants, develop 'organically', that is to say, by means of an unconscious, limited growth, determined by the first germ, or whether, in their origin and development, they are and should be the mutable work of the thinking and directing mind of man: in other words, the question would be - Is man an unconscious production of nature, like the plant? or is he a self-conscious, self-determining, thinking being? Real Democracy written by Frank M. Bryan and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-15 with Political Science categories.

Relying on an astounding collection of more than three decades of firsthand research, Frank M. Bryan examines one of the purest forms of American democracy, the New England town meeting. At these meetings, usually held once a year, all eligible citizens of the town may become legislators; they meet in face-to-face assemblies, debate the issues on the agenda, and vote on them. And although these meetings are natural laboratories for democracy, very few scholars have systematically investigated them. A nationally recognized expert on this topic, Bryan has now done just that. Studying 1,500 town meetings in his home state of Vermont, he and his students recorded a staggering amount of data about them—238,603 acts of participation by 63,140 citizens in 210 different towns. Drawing on this evidence as well as on evocative "witness" accounts—from casual observers to no lesser a light than Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn—Bryan paints a vivid picture of how real democracy works. Among the many fascinating questions he explores: why attendance varies sharply with town size, how citizens resolve conflicts in open forums, and how men and women behave differently in town meetings. In the end, Bryan interprets this brand of local government to find evidence for its considerable staying power as the most authentic and meaningful form of direct democracy. Giving us a rare glimpse into how democracy works in the real world, Bryan presents here an unorthodox and definitive book on this most cherished of American institutions.

Excerpt from What Is Real Democracy? Must It Be Attained to End War? The seed of Truth and the seed of error, of belief and of understanding, - yea, the seed of Spirit and the seed of matter, - are the wheat and tares which time will separate, the one to be burned, the other to be garnered into heavenly places. Following this line of reasoning, adhering strictly to the scientific rules of divine metaphysics, and looking at the proposition from a spiritual standpoint I feel it my duty, as a divine metaphysician, to show, or rather point out, if I may, the absolute fallacy of trying to bring about a cessation to the present war between true democracy, government by the Christ-mentality, and autocracy, government by the so-called human mentality, through the employment of human mental ways and means. Paul says that the "carnal mind" is enmity against God - good. Consequently, by acquiescing with the methods of the carnal mind in an endeavor to end the war, one would make a concession to error, deviate from the metaphysical postulates of divine metaphysics, throw the weight of influence on the wrong or material side, and forfeit his spiritual power, thereby inviting defeat at the outset. Our politics is broken, but it can be fixed. A real democracy is not only possible — it is an urgent necessity. Provocative, succinct and inspiring, The End of Politicians combines insights from the history of democracy with a critical understanding of the information revolution to explain how we can fix democracy by eliminating politicians and replacing them with a representative network of everyday citizens. A wealth of recent evidence has shown that groups of randomly selected, ordinary people can and do make balanced, informed and trusted decisions. These citizens' assemblies are legitimate, accountable, competent and, above all, convincing demonstrations that we can govern ourselves. The future of democracy has arrived. It is time for the end of politicians.

True Democracy As A Prelude To Communism written by Alexandros Chrysis and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-10 with Political Science categories.

This book constitutes a critical intervention in the theoretical discussion over the political relationship between democracy and communism. Shedding light on the philosophical origins of the democracy debate, it draws a clear demarcation line between liberalism and republicanism, arguing that after rejecting the former and supporting the latter, the young Marx endorsed 'true democracy' as a prelude to his forthcoming theory of communism. To this end, while following the dynamics of the Marxian history of political ideas and pre-communist theory of the state, the book takes into account the thought of a vast range of philosophers and political theorists, starting from the Ancient times (Aristotle), passing through the Age of Enlightenment (Spinoza, Rousseau), the German Idealist tradition (Hegel) the Young Hegelians’ Republicanism (Bauer, Ruge, Feuerbach), and reaching our own times (Arendt, Colletti, MacPherson, Castoriadis, Poulantzas). It will be of interest to students and scholars interested in the history of political thought, theories of democracy, and Marxism.
