Min Chen, Arie E. Kaufman and Roni Yage/ Volume graphics is concerned with graphics scenes defined in volume data types, where a model is specified by a mass of points instead of a collection of surfaces. The underlying mathematical definition of such a model is a set of scalar fields, which define the geometrical and physical properties of every point in three dimensional space. As true 3D representations, volume data types possess more descriptive power than surface data types, and are morphologically closer to many high-level modelling schemes in traditional surface graphics such as parametric surfaces, implicit surfaces and volume sweeping. The past decade has witnessed significant advances in volume visualisation, driven mainly by applications such as medical imaging and scientific computation. The work in this field has produced a number of volume rendering methods that enable 3D information in a volumetric dataset to be selectively rendered into 2D images. With modern computer hardware, such a process can easily be performed on an ordinary workstation. More importantly, volume-based rendering offers a consistent solution to the primary deficiencies of the traditional surface-based rendering, which include its inability to encapsulate the internal description of a model, and the difficulties in rendering amorphous phenomena. The emergence of volume-based techniques has not only broadened the extent of graphics applications, but also brought computer graphics closer to other scientific and engineering disciplines, including image processing, computer vision, finite element analysis and rapid prototyping.

This book contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Volume Graphics 200 1 (VG'O I) which took place on June 21 and June 22 at Stony Brook, New York. This year's event was the second in the series, following a successful premiere in Swansea, Wales, in March 1999, and was co-sponsored by the IEEE Technical Committee on Visualization and Graphics (TC-VG) as well as EUROGRAPHICS. The Volume Graphics Workshop is held bi-annually and has been created to pro vide a forum for the exploration and advancement of volume-based techniques, beyond the scope of just volume visualization. It brings together researchers and practitioners both from academia and industry, from many parts of the world. Volume graphics is in the process of evolving into a general graphics technology, and the papers included in these proceedings are testimonial to the wide spectrum of unique applications and solu tions that volumetric representations are able to offer.

The purpose of this volume is to present current work of the Intelligent Computer Graphics community, a community growing up year after year. This volume is a kind of continuation of the previously published Springer volume "Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Computer Graphics". Nowadays, intelligent techniques are more and more used in Computer Graphics in order, not only to optimise the processing time, but also to find more accurate solutions for a lot of Computer Graphics problems, than with traditional methods. This volume contains both invited and selected extended papers from the last 3IA Conference (3IA’2009), which has been held in Athens (Greece) in May 2009. The Computer Graphics areas approached in this volume are behavioural modelling, declarative modelling, intelligent modelling and rendering, data visualisation, scene understanding, realistic rendering, and more.

Numerical simulations of global warming, Mars observation data, and aircraft design are but a few of the topics where the use of human visual perception for data understanding are considered essential. Ten years agoa handful of pioneers professed the value of visualization to skeptical audiences. Today, with supercomputers and sensors producing ever-increasing amounts of data, scientific visualization is accepted throughout much of science and engineering as the fundamental tool for data analysis. Written by a world-wide panel of visualization experts, Scientific Visualization: Advances and Challenges presents astute coverage of prevailing trends, issues, and practice of scientific visualization. From algorithmic topics such as volume graphics and the modeling and visualization of large data sets, to foundations, perception, and interface technology (including virtual reality), this book provides the latest advances in the area. The book demonstrates new techniques, examines diverse application areas, and discusses current limitations and upcoming requirements. Scientific Visualization:Advances and Challenges $> presents readers with a unique opportunity to examine expert thinking and current practice, and to obtain a vision of potential future directions. It will be essential reading for scientific and engineering practitioners and visualization researchers alike. Offers extremely topical and timely coverage of a rapidly evolving area Includes contributions from an international panel of visualization experts in one accessible volume Provides scientific and engineering practitioners as well as visualization researchers with an essential guide to the literature

Visualization in Medicine is the first book on visualization and its application to problems in medical diagnosis, education, and treatment. The book describes the algorithms, the applications and their validation (how reliable are the results?), and the clinical evaluation of the applications (are the techniques useful?). It discusses visualization techniques from research literature as well as the compromises required to solve practical clinical problems. The book covers image acquisition, image analysis, and interaction techniques designed to explore and analyze the data. The final chapter shows how visualization is used for planning liver surgery, one of the most demanding surgical disciplines. The book is based on several years of the authors' teaching and research experience. Both authors have initiated and lead a variety of interdisciplinary projects involving computer scientists and medical doctors, primarily radiologists and surgeons. * A core field of visualization and graphics missing a dedicated book until now * Written by pioneers in the field and illustrated in full color * Covers theory as well as practice
