Seine friedvolle Regierungsperiode begann im Jahre 31 v. Chr. nach der Schlacht bei Actium und endete im Jahre 14 n. Chr. Seine Bildnisse zeigen, wie er von der Mitwelt und Nachwelt gesehen sein wollte. Die ber hmte, zwei Meter hohe Marmorstatue von Primaporta bei Rom stellt ihn als Weltherrscher dar; das Panzerhemd, auf dem seine Taten verherrlicht werden, der Feldherrnmantel und das Zepter sind Zeichen seiner W rde als Imperator. Sein ganzes Aussehen l sst einen mutigen, ernsten, berlegenen jugendlichen Helden erkennen. Und nicht nur von den K nstlern, sondern auch von den Dichtern seiner Zeit, n mlich Vergil, Horaz und Ovid, wurde er als Friedensbringer, mit dem das "Goldene Zeitalter" angebrochen ist, verherrlicht. Augustus selbst verfasste einen Rechenschafts- oder Tatenbericht (Res Gestae), in dem er die eigenen politischen, milit rischen und kulturellen Leistungen der Nachwelt berlieferte und damit ein Bild von sich selbst entwarf. Es ist das Ziel dieser Arbeit, vergleichend herauszuarbeiten, wie diese Selbstdarstellung des Augustus im so genannten Monumentum Ancyranum ausf llt und was der gro e r mische Geschichtsschreiber Tacitus sp ter in seinen Annalen (I, 1-10) ber Augustus schreibt.

The title of this volume is ‘Administration, Prosopography and Appointment Policies in the Roman Empire’.
