Notre travail consiste à analyser le phénomène de construction et de reconstruction de l'identité des Pieds-noirs. L'étude que nous proposons est basée sur les productions discursives que nous avons recueillies grâce à des entretiens. Elle permet de mettre en évidence la complexité des processus identitaires, qu'ils soient conscients ou inconscients. Il s'agit d'une analyse comparative qui fait appel à un certain nombre de champs disciplinaires comme l'histoire, la linguistique ou la sociologie. Ainsi, en mettant en parallèle les différents discours des informateurs, nous pouvons remarquer que l'identité pied-noir, définie à partir d'éléments culturels, sociaux et historiques, présente un aspect collectif, partagé par l'ensemble des membres de la communauté, et un aspect individuel, propre à chacun et variable en fonction des expériences vécues.

S'étant essentiellement déroulée dans la communauté innue de Pessamit (Betsiamites) sur la Haute-Côte-Nord du Saint Laurent au Québec, elle vise à jeter un nouvel éclairage sur les conditions d'émergence de cette épidémie ainsi que sur les raisons expliquant les insuccès répétés des approches des milieux de la santé en la matière. Cet ouvrage s'emploie avec beaucoup de force à mettre en évidence un ensemble de facteurs sociaux, politiques, économiques et culturels qui semblent, à titre de conditions, être à l'origine du développement épidémique du diabète en milieu autochtone. Il fait notamment bien apercevoir comment, dans un contexte d'exclusion, à travers le rapport au corps et à l'acte alimentaire, entre en jeu un système complexe de codes identitaires porteurs de sens et déterminant le devenir de cette maladie. Si cet ouvrage concerne en premier lieu les milieux autochtones, il permet également de faire la lumière sur les dynamiques sociales à l'origine de l'accroissement rapide des taux de prévalence du diabète dans les milieux défavorisés ainsi que dans les pays dits en émergence.
