Excerpt from Reflector, Vol. 10: Christmas Issue, 1931 At midnight bells ring throughout the land to proclaim the arrival of the holiday. Very early in the morning, the children, many of whom are very poor, go about the streets sing ing Christmas carols. Later in the day the boys and girls help to bring in the Christmas tree and the great yule log, which has been cut the preceding year, that it may be thoroughly dry before it is used. It is placed in the fireplace and lighted with a fragment of the last year's yule log, this piece having been kept for the purpose. The children believe that the Christ mas trees are gifts of St. Nicholas. The German boys and girls always have trees. On Christmas Eve someone, strangely attired, calls at each home to inquire if the children have been good. If they have, he opens a bag and tosses nuts about. If a child has been naughty. This is the first truly comprehensive and most up-to-date handbook available on modern reflector antennas and feed sources for diversified space and ground applications. There has never been such an all-encompassing reflector handbook in print, and no currently available title offers coverage of such recent research developments. The Handbook consists of three volumes. Volume I provides a unique combination of theoretical underpinnings with design considerations and techniques. The need for knowledge in reflector antennas has grown steadily over the last two decades due to increased use in space and ground applications, as well as their high gain and wide bandwidth capabilities at relatively low cost. This volume brings you to the leading edge of developments in the field related to numerical techniques, classical reflector geometries, adaptive reflector antennas, shaped reflectors, bifocal and bicollimated dual reflectors, advanced reflectors, and reflect arrays. A must-have reference for both practicing engineers as well as academic researchers.

The end of the Cold War brought new opportunities to explore the long tradition and myriad uses of humour through over two centuries of Russian literature and culture. 'Reflective Laughter' is the first book devoted to an overview of this subject. Bringing together contributions from a number of distinguished scholars from Russia, Europe and North America, this volume ranges from the classics of nineteenth-century literature through to the intellectual and popular comedic culture, both state-sponsored and official, of the twentieth-century, taking in journalism, propaganda, scholarly discourse, jokes, films and television. In doing so, it explores how our understanding remains distorted by the polarization of the East and West during the Cold War.

The intent of this book volume is to provide practical applications and design information on reflector antennas used for several communications systems. This book covers recent developments of reflector antennas used for satellite communications, terrestrial communications, and remote sensing applications. New subjects are introduced for the first time, including satellite antennas, Terahertz antennas, PIM, multipaction, corona, deployable mesh reflector antennas, and mechanical aspects of reflector antennas. In addition, this book contains a separate topic on integrated feed assembly for reflector antennas covering analysis, design, fabrication, and test.

Handbook Of Reflection And Reflective Inquiry written by Nona Lyons and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-07 with Philosophy categories.

Philosophers have warned of the perils of a life spent without reflection, but what constitutes reflective inquiry - and why it’s necessary in our lives - can be an elusive concept. Synthesizing ideas from minds as diverse as John Dewey and Paulo Freire, theHandbook of Reflection and Reflective Inquiry presents reflective thought in its most vital aspects, not as a fanciful or nostalgic exercise, but as a powerful means of seeing familiar events anew, encouraging critical thinking and crucial insight, teaching and learning. In its opening pages, two seasoned educators, Maxine Greene and Lee Shulman, discuss reflective inquiry as a form of active attention (Thoreau’s "wide-awakeness"), an act of consciousness, and a process by which people can understand themselves, their work (particularly in the form of life projects), and others. Building on this foundation, the Handbook analyzes through the work of 40 internationally oriented authors: - Definitional issues concerning reflection, what it is and is not; - Worldwide social and moral conditions contributing to the growing interest in reflective inquiry in professional education; - Reflection as promoted across professional educational domains, including K-12 education, teacher education, occupational therapy, and the law; - Methods of facilitating and scaffolding reflective engagement; - Current pedagogical and research practices in reflection; - Approaches to assessing reflective inquiry. Educators across the professions as well as adult educators, counselors and psychologists, and curriculum developers concerned with adult learning will find the Handbook of Reflection and Reflective Inquiry an invaluable teaching tool for challenging times.

John H. Stanfield II, a leading historian of Black social science, distills decades of his research and thinking in a set of articles—some original to the volume, others from fugitive sources—that trace the trajectories of Black scholars and scholarship in relationship to the broader African American experience over the past two centuries. Stanfield’s signature contributions to this research tradition range from the role of philanthropy in the study and life of African Americans to institutional racism in sociology and the impacts of race on scholarly careers. His analyses run from global formulations to individual biographies, including his own, and stretch from the early decades of social science to the present. This work creates a nuanced historical context for reflective Black sociology that will be of interest to social historians, sociologists, and scholars of color from all disciplines.

History Of Wireless written by T. K. Sarkar and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-30 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Important new insights into how various components and systems evolved Premised on the idea that one cannot know a science without knowing its history, History of Wireless offers a lively new treatment that introduces previously unacknowledged pioneers and developments, setting a new standard for understanding the evolution of this important technology. Starting with the background-magnetism, electricity, light, and Maxwell's Electromagnetic Theory-this book offers new insights into the initial theory and experimental exploration of wireless. In addition to the well-known contributions of Maxwell, Hertz, and Marconi, it examines work done by Heaviside, Tesla, and passionate amateurs such as the Kentucky melon farmer Nathan Stubblefield and the unsung hero Antonio Meucci. Looking at the story from mathematical, physics, technical, and other perspectives, the clearly written text describes the development of wireless within a vivid scientific milieu. History of Wireless also goes into other key areas, including: The work of J. C. Bose and J. A. Fleming German, Japanese, and Soviet contributions to physics and applications of electromagnetic oscillations and waves Wireless telegraphic and telephonic development and attempts to achieve transatlantic wireless communications Wireless telegraphy in South Africa in the early twentieth century Antenna development in Japan: past and present Soviet quasi-optics at near-mm and sub-mm wavelengths The evolution of electromagnetic waveguides The history of phased array antennas Augmenting the typical, Marconi-centered approach, History of Wireless fills in the conventionally accepted story with attention to more specific, less-known discoveries and individuals, and challenges traditional assumptions about the origins and growth of wireless. This allows for a more comprehensive understanding of how various components and systems evolved. Written in a clear tone with a broad scientific audience in mind, this exciting and thorough treatment is sure to become a classic in the field.
