Im Jahr 2008 werden die Präsidentschaftswahlen mitverfolgt. Bei der Beschäftigung mit dem drittgrößten Land der Erde (Bevölkerung) wird häufig dessen religiöses Leben thematisiert. Eine besondere Rolle wird dabei dem Puritanismus zugesprochen: Kaum eine Diskussion um die kulturellen Besonderheiten der Vereinigten Staaten kommt ohne den Hinweis auf das puritanische Erbe dieses Landes aus. Das Heimatland der „Pilgrim fathers“ war England, hier finden sich ihre Wurzeln. Die Hausarbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Anfängen des Puritanismus, den historischen Hintergrund dazu stellt die Reformationsgeschichte Englands dar. Um dem Rahmen des Seminars „Geschichte der Reformation“ Rechnung zu tragen, wird der Forschungsstand zur Englischen Reformation skizziert. Hierbei erwies sich die Überblicksdarstellung von Ehrenpreis und Lotz-Heumann in Reformation und konfessionelles Zeitalter als wertvolle Hilfe. Unentbehrlich für die Beschäftigung mit der Geschichte des Puritanismus ist Deppermanns Aufsatz „Der Englische Puritanismus“. Als nützlich erwiesen sich auch die Darstellungen von Greyerz in England im Jahrhundert der Revolutionen 1603-1714 und Religion und Kultur. Europa 1500-1800. Als Nachschlagewerk, gerade auch für weiterführende Literaturhinweise, kann Wende Großbritannien 1500-2000 dienen. „Puritaner“ – was zunächst ein Spottname war – sei eine Sammelbezeichnung für alle nonkonformistischen, calvinistischen Gruppen am Rande der englischen Staatskirche gewesen, so Hochgeschwender, die energisch dafür eingetreten seien, den Anglikanismus von sämtlichen papistischen, katholischen Relikten, namentlich in der Liturgie, aber auch im Bereich der kirchlichen Institutionen, der Hierarchie und der Theologie zu reinigen. Im folgenden ersten Teil wird ein Überblick über die Reformationsgeschichte Englands gegeben, mit Hinweisen auf die puritanische Bewegung, um dann im zweiten Teil der Arbeit den Ursprung und die Anfänge des Puritanismus offen zulegen. Unity in Diversity presents a fresh appraisal of the vibrant and diverse culture of Stuart Puritanism, provides a historiographical and historical survey of current issues within Puritanism, critiques notions of Puritanisms, which tend to fragment the phenomenon, and introduces unitas within diversitas within three divergent Puritans, John Downame, Francis Rous, and Tobias Crisp. This study draws on insights from these three figures to propose that seventeenth-century English Puritanism should be thought of both in terms of Familienähnlichkeit, in which there are strong theological and social semblances across Puritans of divergent persuasions, and in terms of the greater narrative of the Puritan Reformation, which united Puritans in their quest to reform their church and society.
