Nationalism And Ethnic Conflict In Indonesia written by Jacques Bertrand and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with History categories.
Since 1998, which marked the end of the thirty-three-year New Order regime under President Suharto, there has been a dramatic increase in ethnic conflict and violence in Indonesia. In his innovative and persuasive account, Jacques Bertrand argues that conflicts in Maluku, Kalimantan, Aceh, Papua, and East Timur were a result of the New Order's narrow and constraining reinterpretation of Indonesia's 'national model'. The author shows how, at the end of the 1990s, this national model came under intense pressure at the prospect of institutional transformation, a reconfiguration of ethnic relations, and an increase in the role of Islam in Indonesia's political institutions. It was within the context of these challenges, that the very definition of the Indonesian nation and what it meant to be Indonesian came under scrutiny. The book sheds light on the roots of religious and ethnic conflict at a turning point in Indonesia's history.

The authors discuss the intricate relationships between interfaith activities and religious identity, nationalism, violence, and peacemaking in four very different settings: Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan. They interview the whole cross-section of local Interfaith Dialogue workers: not only clerics and "dialoguing" professionals but also laypersons, who are often more eloquent than any scholar at expressing the realities, hopes, and frustrations of Interfaith Dialogue within their home countries. They take on the perennial dilemma faced by Interfaith Dialogue proponents: avoid politics and risk irrelevance, or take up the political questions and risk "politicizing" the dialogue, with all the disruptive effects this implies. Above all, this important book demonstrates the desire for interfaith dialogue in these polarized societies, and the extent to which, against strong odds, religious communities are connecting with each other. In the present book entitled Unity in the Diversity of Different Religions, with the help of specific quotes and many true or mythical stories, the author illustrates that even though religions of the world may appear very different from one another in their rituals or ways of worship, at their core, they all teach us to be good human beings. They all teach us to practice virtues (like love, compassion, and forgiveness) and to forsake sinful tendencies (like lust, anger, greed, and ego). The author hopes that the readers would enjoy these quotes and stories and find that beside their own religion, other religions also have good things to tell, which we need to share with our friends, particularly young children, so that this world may eventually become like heaven on earth, where people of all faiths are blossoming and spreading their beauty and fragrance for all to enjoy. For nearly seven years, from 1967 to 1974, many hundreds of bright, college-going youth—most of whom had previously been labeled as high school “dropouts”—would proudly celebrate their graduation from Harlem Prep, a small educational experiment that grew to become a nationally renowned, cherished community institution in the iconic Black neighborhood of Harlem. Operating in a repurposed supermarket that used blackboards as classroom dividers, the school’s unique multicultural philosophy inspired all who stepped foot inside. This philosophy, exemplified by the school’s motto of “unity through diversity,” shaped the school’s ethos, fostered student achievement, and, most of all, made Harlem Prep distinct from any other educational institution, past or present. In Strength through Diversity, Barry M. Goldenberg shares the history of this one-of-a-kind multicultural institution from its rise to its apex and decline, revealing the collective stories of hope, struggle, and love from administrators, teachers, community members, and students. Using history as a blueprint, Goldenberg illustrates the untapped potential of multicultural education in the ongoing quest for educational equity. strengththroughdiversity.com

Religious intolerance -- it is so much a part of our daily lives. The world is torn apart by it. Hatred and violence are justified in the name of religion. And yet, all hope is not lost. Goodness still has a chance. Through the ages, we have heard the voice of sanity, the voice of love and concern above the din of this madness. We had heard it when Kahlil Gibran said in The Prophet: "Your daily life is your temple and your religion. Whenever you enter into it, take with you ... all men." And we hear it again in this book. This book is an attempt to glean the best in living religious literature, and also is a guide to the understanding of the fundamental unity underlying the great religions of the world.
