«A nossa relação com o território tem conhecido uma notória complexificação. Vivemos o fim do tempo da territorialidade local compacta, situação em que era possível encontrar imediatamente, para cada pessoa, objeto ou acontecimento, uma rede estável de significação referida a um lugar. Hoje, o significado dos lugares parece afetado por jogos de substituição que os tornam incertos e pela complexidade própria do fenómeno de multiplicação das pertenças. Muitos dos intérpretes da nossa contemporaneidade, a partir de diferentes pontos de vista, sublinham a centralidade desta dinâmica social. Nestor Canclini usou a expressão «culturas de fronteira», e Arjun Appadurai propôs o neologismo ethnoscape para falar de uma paisagem humana marcada por mobilidades de diversa ordem, num regime de temporalidade que Peter Sloterdijk apelidou de «tempo do globo». Um dos mais importantes representantes da chamada história cultural, Peter Burke, sublinhou que o hibridismo cultural é um dos traços mais identificadores da modernidade histórica. Os contextos metropolitanos apresentam-se, de facto, como o principal laboratório para a observação de uma mudança cultural de amplas dimensões — a passagem da geografia dos universos estáveis ao pluriverso dos mapas interculturais. O itinerário que se propõe neste livro, que reúne vários autores num trabalho de investigação colaborativa, parte da observação do particular impacto da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa na configuração das metamorfoses do religioso na sociedade portuguesa, mas integra essa discussão no plano mais amplo das dinâmicas globais.»

Portuguese democracy is now celebrating its 50th anniversary. Portugal joined the European Union (EU) in 1986, but the enduring legacies of the country’s transition process from authoritarianism to democracy became apparent during the European sovereign debt crisis, when Portugal experienced its third bailout since the institutionalization of democratic government. Although the first decade after EU accession was one of slight growth and investment, Portugal’s economy has, in effect, been performing poorly since the beginning of the 21st century. Among the major changes in Portuga - as in much of Southern Europe - as a result of the ‘great recession’, was the emergence of important new actors, including populist parties, new social movements and the polarization of attitudes toward the EU. In some of these areas, the phrase ‘with the exception of Portugal’ was always present. This book explores the factors that might explain why this is no longer the case, presenting a global overview, with an interdisciplinary focus, of the processes of economic, social and political changes in Portuguese democracy since the 2008 economic crisis. The volume is accessible to a broad academic audience, with chapters examining economic, political, social and foreign policy issues, for scholars interested in an analysis of Portugal’s emergence from the economic crisis.
