One famous target of Progressive Era attempts to rein in monopolistic big business was the eastern Sugar Trust. Less known is how federal regulators also tried to break monopoly control over beet sugar in the West by going after the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company, a business supported and controlled by the Latter-day Saints church and run by Mormon authorities. As sugar beet agriculture boomed, the Mormon church’s involvement led directly to monopolistic practices by Utah-Idaho Sugar and to federal investigations. Church leaders encouraged members, a majority population in much of the intermountain West, to patronize the company exclusively, as suppliers and consumers. As early as 1890, Mormon church president Wilford Woodruff had called missionaries to raise money for the fledgling company and asserted divine inspiration for church support. Utah-Idaho bridged the cooperative, theocratic, self-sufficient economic model of nineteenth-century Mormonism and the integration of the Mormon West into the national market economy. Religion, Politics, and Sugar shows, through the example of an important western business, how national commercial, political, and legal forces in the early twentieth century came west and, more specifically, how they affected the important role the Mormon church played in economic affairs in the region.

A Novel about religion and politics, in high school. Sugar is a sixteen-year-old student at Chesty B. Willis High School in sunny Barstock Township. She is an atheist in a very religious community, but this has not affected her life to this point, and so she ignores it, and lives her life quietly. Her only friend (due to some kind of social disorder which makes meeting new people a torturous affair) is Tricia, the daughter of a very religious single mother. Tricia is pressured by her mother into taking part in a variety of abrasive religious activities that she secretly wants no part of. The most notable of these is the Barstock Christian Youth Fellowship. The Fellowship is led by Byron, the fundamentalist son of a rather moderate preacher, who decides one day to use the school to spread his beliefs to everyone, whether they want them or not. This is the final straw for Tricia. She takes a stand against him, and becomes the town pariah as a result. Sugar would like to help, preferably in a way that doesn't require talking to anybody, but soon learns that the only response to political activism, is more political activism. Meanwhile, Sugar's social phobias are stressed on two fronts. First by Yui, the strangely forward student/shop girl from across town who is hell-bent on making Sugar her friend for some reason; and second by Joss, the boy she saw at the video store whom her peers are pressuring her into saying 'hi' to. Thus, partisan politics take root in the small town high school. Everyone takes sides, and Sugar becomes the most hated person in town, when all she really wanted was to be ignored. Religion and Politics in Interwar Yugoslavia explores the interaction between religion, nationalism, and political modernity in the first half of the 20th century, taking the case of the Serbian Orthodox Church as an example. This book historicizes the widely held assumption that the bond between religion and nationalism in the Balkans is a natural one or that this bond has been historically inevitable. It tells a complex story of how East Orthodox Christianity came to be at the core of one version of Serbian nationalism by bringing together the themes of religion, nationalism, politics, state-building, secularization, and modernity. Maria Falina reconstructs how the ideological fusion between Serbian nationalism and East Orthodox Christianity was forged. The analysis emphasizes ideas and ideologies through a close reading of public discourses and historical narratives while paying attention to individual actors and their personal histories. The book argues that the particular political vision of the Serbian Orthodox Church emerged in reaction to and in interaction with the challenges posed by political modernity that were not unique to Yugoslavia. These included establishing the modern multinational and multi-religious state, the fear of secularization, and the rise of communism and fascism.
